Verizon Wireless Oct. 13 began selling the Samsung Stratosphere Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone Oct. 13 for $149 after a $50 rebate. The phone has a 4-inch Super AMOLED display atop a five-row QWERTY keyboard and is powered by a Samsung Hummingbird 1GHz processor. That the Stratosphere has a QWERTY keyboard is itself not the most interesting detail about the phone, though Android phones with QWERTY keyboards are usually of the candybar form factor. What is interesting is it's Verizon's first 4G LTE-enabled handset with a QWERTY keyboard. This device is best thought of as Samsung's answer to the seminal Motorola Droid, which kicked off the Android smartphone craze around this time two years ago. This eWEEK slide show provides a quick image tour of the Stratosphere, which is a fine slider for the price.

With its soft, round features, front and center branding and black framed display, the Stratosphere looks like any other Verizon-Samsung candybar phone at first blush.
