Symbol technologies this week will introduce a handheld computer aimed at customers that need to manage supply chains remotely.

To be available next month, the Symbol MC9000-G comes with the Windows CE or Windows Mobile (Pocket PC 2003) operating system, both from Microsoft.

Designed for inventory management and price checking, the laser scanner on the device can read codes at 4 inches or at 40 feet, said company officials. It is also designed to withstand the rigors of warehouse use and can survive a 6-foot drop.

The MC9000-G will cost from $2,995 to the mid-$3,000s, depending on configuration.
