Enterprise Mobility: Windows Phone 'Mango' Improves Microsoft's Smartphone Game

By Nicholas Kolakowski on 2011-10-03

Microsoft's new Windows Phone "Mango" update offers more than 500 tweaks and improvements to the platform. Some of those new features, such as multitasking and a revamped Office hub, are major. Others are under-the-hood adjustments meant to improve performance or fix niggling bugs. Smartphones loaded with Mango also have the option to operate as WiFi hotspots for nearby devices, provided that feature is enabled by a carrier.  Over the next few months, smartphones preloaded with Mango will roll out on a handful of new hardware partners, including Nokia. Microsoft likely hopes that concerted push will boost the fortunes of its smartphone platform, which has faced some hard competition in the first year of existence from the likes of Apple's iPhone and Google Android. "We haven't sold quite as many probably as I would have hoped we would have sold in the first year," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently told the audience during the company's Financial Analyst Meeting. "I think with a little bit more effort, a little bit more energy, the level of enthusiasm from the customer base is high enough we've just got to kick this thing to the next level." The following are some of Windows Phone Mango's top-level improvements. The update is expected to roll onto existing Windows Phones over the next few weeks.

Mango

Windows Phone Mango began rolling out to consumers Sept. 27. However, it could take several weeks for all phones to update.

Accounts and Groups

Mango now bakes Twitter and LinkedIn accounts into its user interface, feeding you messages from those social networks in addition to Facebook. You can also create specific Groups of contacts, such as "Family."

Email

Mango smartphones can link multiple work and personal email boxes into a single message hub; or you can opt to keep them separate. Emails with a common subject are grouped together into a "conversation" view.

More Robust Search

Microsoft has introduced new search features to Windows Phone Mango, including vision search (which enables your phone to scan QR codes and tags) and music search, which tries to guess any songs playing nearby.

Bing Images

Microsoft has made a more robust search experience a goal for Mango, as evidenced by features such as Bing image search—which offers results akin to the full Web version.

Voice Search

As with the original version of Windows Phone, users can conduct a voice search via their Mango device.

Xbox Live

Microsoft has revamped its Xbox Live games hub.

Message Threading

Microsoft has adopted a conversation thread that links in multiple sources, including text messages and Facebook. Key benefit: Being able to consolidate a conversation spread over a couple of different services in one place.

Local Scout

The preinstalled Local Scout app offers nearby eateries and activities.

Picky Eater

You can refine searches within Local Scout, up to choosing a certain local cuisine for your gastronomical attentions.

Office

The expanded Office hub syncs Office documents with Microsoft's SkyDrive, allowing you to divide editing duties between your smartphone and your laptop or desktop.

Excel

Microsoft Excel Mobile facilitates the creation and editing of Excel documents while on the move.

Marketplace

Microsoft has encouraged developers to create new-and-improved apps for Windows Phone Marketplace.

Calendars

As with email, Mango consolidates multiple calendars into a single interface.

Multitasking

Windows Phone Mango introduces multitasking to Microsoft's smartphone franchise.

Me, Me, Me

The "Me" card is your jumping-off point for posting messages, receiving notifications, setting your online chat status and so on.
