eWEEK Labs Walk-Through: MetaGeek Wi-Spy DBx
by Matt Sarrel
Warning
With a few hours of data, it is easy to see that it would be best to avoid installing a new 802.11b access point on channel 1, 6 or 11 at this location.
Broadcast SSIDs
When installed on a computer with an additional WLAN NIC (network interface card), Chanalyzer can display broadcast SSIDs (service set identifiers). Also note the interference visible in the top window, which was caused by running a GE microwave for 1 minute.
Three Simultaneous Views
It's helpful to display all three views at once. From top to bottom, this is Spectral, Topographic and Planar.
Analyzing the Location
Within minutes of my first run I was able to get a sense of what's in the air at this location.
The Wi-Fi Report
A handy feature is the Wi-Fi Channel Report, which assigns a performance value to different channels so you can quickly tell which channel to use for a new AP deployment.
MetaGeek's Wi-Spy DBx and Chanalyzer 3.2 beta are great tools for those looking to troubleshoot WLAN interference quickly, easily and inexpensively.
