Exalead APIs Enable Customized Enterprise Search

Exalead offers APIs and toolkits to let customers tailor their searches for specific interests and applications.

Exalead is releasing a new version of its search engine that enterprises can customize to gather information tailored to their business interests.

Launched Dec. 5, Exalead One:Enterprise 4.6 includes APIs (application programming interfaces) that let IT managers and OEMs tailor search for specific interests.

The new Push API funnels specific content to Exaleads index and can be used to develop custom connectors with such technical features as linguistic and semantic processing, metadata management and document conversion.

The XML Front Search API lets businesses customize their user interface with the same search features offered in Exaleads user interface.

An API Specification for Alerts lets users receive search results in an RSS format through any RSS reader, with the search query embedding extensions for results, suggested terms and thumbnail content.

Exaleads search improvements are a sign of the increasing demands for customization features that enterprises are clamoring for.

Business users want to not only search, but search for data in a specific way from traditional top-line search applications from Google, Yahoo and MSN. The idea among business users is to cultivate more value from the search results tied to their line of business.

Accordingly, Paris-based Exalead, along with rivals Vivisimo, Fast, Endeca and Autonomy, have been broadening the scope of their enterprise search products to enable more flexibility for business users.

In keeping with the trend, Exalead is also now allowing users to build vertical search applications for specific subjects—the new software includes an HTML extraction toolkit.

This mini software suite lets programmers build vertical search applications for business intelligence, competitive intelligence, product search, directories and even human resources.

Capitalizing on Exaleads ability to support 64-bit architectures, Exalead One:Enterprise 4.6 also features a connector for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, which enables users of that popular content management application to index multimedia files, which tend to be heavy on memory.

Finally, Exalead has forged a connector for EMC Documentum E-Room, as well as an enhanced connector for EMC Documentum Content Server. These tools are geared for better management, performance and integration.

Exaleads search improvements follow the companys iPhone-tailored search engine. Launched Nov. 29, the search engine enables searches for text-based content as well as video, images and Wikipedia from the iPhone.
