What We'd Like to See
from Google Before 2009

8. Reconcile Privacy Issues with the Government

Google needs to preserve its secret sauce in search to keep rivals at bay. Google also needs to be somewhat transparent. How much of our content does Google sift through? What is it using it for? Privacy advocates claim "too much" and "targeted behavioral advertising," respectively. Google denies both. While the company may have kept the Bush administration at bay during its rise to power, the new president and Congress may not be so lenient. Expect Google to offer more than tent revivals as we head toward the election season. Expect more disclosure and compromise.

Can Google equal or surpass the $17.6 billion or so it earned in online advertising in 2007? That remains to be seen, as do several other things as Google hurtles forward in high-tech for the last four months of the year. In 2007, the company added some more irons to the fire with Android and OpenSocial, both of which should bear some fruit this year. But it's also lost key team members to rival Facebook. Here's what we'd like to see from Google before the New Year.
