It is often said that you get what you pay for, but in the security industry, that is not necessarily a bad thing. Gartner predicted the global security software business would surpass $16.5 billion this year, with $4.2 billion of that being in the consumer segment. However, not included in those figures are free programs such as Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG Antivirus and others that offer protection for many users. Occasionally, the presence of such tools has drawn the ire of security vendors selling their products, which usually contain more features. Nonetheless, free security tools can be the difference between having some protection and no protection for those people who are unwilling to shell out money for software and licenses.
