China Delays Proprietary Wireless Encryption Protocol

Officials announce indefinite delay of WAPI.

China agreed Wednesday to indefinitely delay implementation of its proprietary wireless encryption protocol. Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi announced the delay of Wireless LAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure, or WAPI, following day-long talks with U.S. trade officials in Washington.

The standard was to have taken effect on June 1. Prior to todays decision, companies like Intel Corp. and Broadcom Corp. had said they would not develop WAPI-compliant gear.
