Cries for government regulation of privacy have increased during the past few months, in part because of the controversy involving Facebook, but also due to an increasing awareness of how far existing laws fall short in protecting consumer rights and information on the Internet. There have been several calls for change, starting with reforms to the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) and extending to new legislation setting notification requirements for organizations collecting or sharing information.
