Most security appliances can handle only one job at a time, but a new appliance from Crossbeam Systems Inc. can keep multiple balls in the air. Crossbeam this month began shipping a beta version of its X40S security appliance. Unlike most security appliances, which are single-function machines, the X40S Version 2.0 can concurrently run several applications from different vendors. The Linux-based appliance comprises several modules that can be added or removed as needed. Currently, the box supports Check Point Software Technologies Ltd.s Firewall-1 and VPN-1 applications and Enterasys Networks Inc.s Dragon Sensor intrusion detection system.
