FalconStor, Bell Microproducts Team to Penetrate SMB Backup Market
FalconStor Software Inc. of Melville, N.Y., has partnered with Bell Microproducts, a distributor based in San Jose, Calif., to develop backup and recovery appliances geared toward the SMB (small and medium-sized business) market.
The appliances, which will be powered by FalconStor technology but built and distributed by Bell Micro, will be offered in two versions.
The first version will be based on FalconStors VTL (virtual tape library) software, which consolidates the management of backup resources and speeding recovery.
The second version will be based on FalconStors iSCSI Storage Server software and offer snapshots, delta replication and zero-impact backup and restore services to application hosts attached to an IP network, all based on the SAN (storage area network).

QLogic Introduces New Fibre Channel Adapter Based in PCIe ExpressModule
QLogic Corp. of Aliso Viejo, Calif., has introduced a Fibre Channel adapter based on the PCIe ExpressModule specification, which defines the hot-pluggable I/O modular form factors for enterprise-class servers.
The new SANblade QEM2462 adapter, part of QLogics SAN Pro line, offers hot-plug capability and 4GB/sec performance, while allowing users to install and remove the adapter without tools.

Promise Technology Announces 8-Port SATA RAID Controller
Promise Technology Inc. of Milpitas, Calif., has introduced an eight-port SATA (Serial ATA) RAID controller designed for RAID 6 data protection, a disk drive failure tolerance technology.
The SuperTrak EX8300 3GB/sec controller, built on the Intel Xscale microarchitecture, is intended for high-capacity storage applications like disk-to-disk backup, NAS (network-attached storage) and nearline storage, security and video editing.
Other features include a full open-source Linux driver architecture, support for RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and JBOD (just a bunch of disks), multiple logical drive and LUN (logical unit number) support, automatic/manual rebuild of a hot spare drive, and technology for error handling and recovery.

Memorex Introduces MiniDrive
Memorex of Cerritos, Calif., has introduced a portable storage device smaller than the rest of its family of TravelDrive devices.
At 2.25 inches long, the Mini TravelDrive is about an inch shorter than other TravelDrives.
The unit is also less than an inch wide and about one-third of an inch thick, and is available in 256MB, 512MB, 1GB or 2GB capacities.
The unit comes with SecureTD software that allows users to set passwords to discourage unauthorized access to files.

IBM Certifies Spectra Logic Libraries
IBM Corp. of Armonk, N.Y., has certified the T-series tape libraries from Spectra Logic Corp. of Boulder, Colo., as compatible with its HPSS (high performance storage system), software that was developed jointly by IBM and the U.S. Department of Energys research and development laboratories.
Now that the tape libraries have been certified, they can be used to help large organizations aggregate, transfer and classify petabytes of data, said Dick Watson, co-chair of the HPSS executive committee.
