At the Gartner Expo in Orlando, Steve Cumings, Hewlett-Packard's director of Infrastructure, walks us through the HP POD (Performance Optimized Data Center), a mobile data center container that rolls out an expandable blade data center for customers to add computing resources for such things as Web 2.0 applications and high-performance computing. He claims the POD's are also great for use in disaster recovery and to quickly expand your IT footprint. Cumings also explains how you can base your data center strategy on POD's by adding capacity when needed, instead of building a facility and not filling it right away. The POD is HP's attempt to compete with other mobile and container data centers offerings from IBM and Sun Microsystems.
