Virtualization Technology: VMware Improves Desktop Virtualization Scalability, Costs with View 4

By Jeffrey Burt on 2009-11-09

VMware is rolling out View 4, the latest version of its desktop virtualization offering that leverages the company's vSphere 4 virtualization platform and the strong partnership VMware has with EMC and Cisco Systems. View 4 is designed to let businesses run their desktop virtualization environment as a managed service model, which VMware officials say will increase the user experience and scalability of desktop virtualization deployments while cutting TCO costs by as much as 50 percent. With such features as the PC over IP protocol and a strong ecosystem that includes Cisco, HP, Dell and IBM, VMware is looking to drive the adoption of desktop virtualization into the mainstream enterprise space, where IT administrators can see the benefits but are worried about acquisition costs, scalability and user experience, according to VMware officials.

For IT Administrators

VMware is looking to make it easier for IT administrators to manage tens of thousands of virtualized desktops, where before they could handle 500 to 1,000.

Creating Virtual Pools

IT administrators can create automated pools of virtualized desktops that can be customized through VMware's View Manager.

Protocol Choice

VMware View 4 gives users a choice of communications protocols, enabling them to decide between Microsoft's RDP or the PC over IP protocol in View 4, which VMware licenses from Teradici.

Removing the Smartcard Option

Using View 4, IT administrators can opt to require users to use smartcard authentication in order to activate sessions when the RDP is being used in the virtualized desktop environment.

User Logon

VMware officials say View 4 makes it easier for users to manage their virtual desktop environment, including giving them desktop options when they sign on.

View and vSphere

Building View 4 atop vSphere 4 brings a host of enhancements for desktop virtualization in the areas of performance and scalability. It also brings VMware's vMotion migration tool into the environment.
