Windows & Interoperability: Microsoft, Facebook Launch Docs for Facebook Beta
Microsoft and Facebook paired up to launch the beta version of Docs for Facebook, an applications platform that allows users to create, edit and share Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents via the new Docs.com Website. Users can then share those documents with their Facebook friends, as well as give them editing privileges. The beta is a product of Microsoft's FUSE Labs, which is devoted to developing social networking software for both consumers and businesses. The Docs for Facebook announcement comes at a time of increased competition in the cloud-based productivity arena, with Microsoft looking to counter the rising prevalence of Google Apps. In an attempt to boost its own cloud presence, the upcoming Office 2010 release includes browser-accessible versions of OneNote, Excel, Word and PowerPoint for Windows Live subscribers.
