Windows: Microsoft Windows 8: Key Dates to Remember for the OS, Other Products

Microsoft has announced the release to manufacturing (RTM) of Windows 8, Internet Explorer 10 and Windows Server 2012, and also completed the final builds of Visual Studio 2012 and .NET 4.5. The release to manufacturing of Windows 8 marks the completion of product development and testing. Microsoft's hardware partners are now armed with final code, and can begin building new Windows 8 PCs and devices to introduce this fall, starting Friday, Oct.26, at general availability. In a blog post on the issue, Microsoft spokesman Brandon LeBlanc said, "People will be able get Windows 8 starting on Oct. 26, either by upgrading for $39.99 or on a new PC or device. And if you buy an eligible Windows 7 PC today, you will be able to purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99 (U.S.) through the Windows Upgrade Offer." The Windows Store also is now open for business. RTM delivers an opportunity for developers to publish and offer paid apps. Microsoft releases Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 to manufacturers. The company also releases Windows RT (also known as WinRT) to manufacturers, according to reports and sources. However, Microsoft has not officially confirmed if WinRT has shipped.
