Better graphics support, USB redirection, reduced network bandwidth when working with graphics-rich applications and more flexible memory usage are all included in the first service pack for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is of special interest to IT desktop managers who have strategic, high-performance desktop virtualization projects on the drawing board, as well as system managers who are looking to improve existing virtual server density in the data center. In the following slideshow, I go through some of the configuration details for using RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory, both new features in the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 was released late February and is offered as a no-charge download from Microsoft.

Inbound Rules
Inbound firewall rules on the host server need to be set to allow RemoteFX connections.
New role services
RemoteFX is enabled as a new Windows 2008 R2 SP1 role service.
