Microsoft rolled out the beta of Office 2010 and other productivity software, and made some key announcements about its Windows Azure cloud platform, during the Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles this week. Microsoft issued an official response to news of Google releasing its Chrome Operating System to open source for developers. Although the Chrome OS will not be available to end users for at least another year, Microsoft is already citing Windows 7 as a more viable alternative for working on both the Web and the desktop. The initial target of the Chrome OS will be netbooks, whose always-on data connection will allow the browser-based operating system to launch and run its applications from the cloud.

Google is pairing its automatic speech recognition technology with its YouTube caption system to offer automatic captions. Auto-caps use the same voice recognition algorithms that power automatic voice mail transcription in Google Voice to generate captions for video on the fly. This a boon for deaf and hearing-impaired users who want to enjoy the millions of videos on the YouTube video sharing service. Google's YouTube team is also launching automatic caption timing, making it much easier for users to create captions manually.

Chrome OS is a sort of Web operating system that boots up a netbook in a fraction of the time it takes to start today's existing computers, with Web applications loading in just a few more seconds. Google is trying to make the Chrome OS load time closer to that of a television than a computer. To do that, Google cut out several computer booting processes, and Chrome OS is geared for Flash-based storage. Security is also unique. The Web apps will run on application tabs within Chrome OS, which users will access with one click and manage in persistent windows if they so desire. The first Chrome OS netbooks won't appear until 2010, going head to head with Microsoft Windows Azure devices.

NEW YORKThe Web 2.0 Expo was not quite the news frenzy that its San Francisco-based brother Web 2.0 Summit was in 2009. But the show's creator, high-tech publishing guru Tim O'Reilly, provided some zing Nov. 17 by arguing that arms races between Google and Apple as well as Facebook and Twitter threaten to stifle the Internet as we know it. O'Reilly also said Microsoft would emerge as a major player in the open Web ecosystem. Digg founder Kevin Rose and Digg CEO Jay Adelson discussed the past, present and future of Digg, while Hunch Chief Product Officer Caterina Fake and Microsoft researcher Danah Boyd held forth on the social Web. Lifehacker founder Gina Trapani discussed some Google Wave use cases.

The Motorola Droid has been touted as a potential iPhone killer by any number of reviewers since its Nov. 6 debut, and the device does indeed offer many features that could allow it to seize substantial market share in the smartphone arena. The Droid runs the Google Android v2.0 operating system, which integrates services such as Gmail, YouTube and easy access to Amazon.com's MP3 Store.
For those who use their smartphones as a productivity platform, the Droid offers a good deal of functionality in that department. For business users, the Droid offers up integration with Exchange 2003 and 2007, as well as the ability to view Microsoft Office and PDF documents. Its Google Maps Navigation beta offers voice-guided navigation, while the 5-megapixel integrated camera includes auto-focus and the ability to edit images. Google released the Chrome Operating System, an alternative to Microsoft Windows and Apple's Mac OS X, to open source for developers, but said end users will not be able to use the Web operating system until late 2010. During a demo, Google's Sundar Pichai showed how Chrome OS booted up on an Asus Eee PC netbook in 7 seconds, with 3 more seconds to log onto an application. Chrome OS had the look and feel of the Chrome Web browser, which has 40 million regular users. Chrome OS was designed with speed, simplicity and security in mind.
