REVIEW: The Dot Hill 2722 is a 2U RAID storage array that can house as many as 24 2.5-inch drives accessible via dual 4Gb Fibre Channel controllers. eWEEK Labs' tests show that the system is a solid step into the smaller 2.5-inch form factor, with an easy-to-use GUI, good performance and a high-availability architecture.

Flexibility, extensibility, thorough management capabilities and first-class performance make the HP LeftHand P4300 4.8TB SAS Starter SAN Solution an excellent choice for midrange and above iSCSI storage.

REVIEW: With miSAN D, Cybernetics establishes the right balance of price and features for the price-conscious iSCSI SAN shopper. Where other SAN manufacturers pack innumerable features into their products, Cybernetics focuses on providing only those features you’re likely to use: volume snapshots, internal RAID, full device redundancy and device-to-device replication.

Virtualization provides the opportunity for a security do-over.

VMware's demonstration of vSphere 4--the successor to Infrastructure 3 and ESX 3.5--shows that the "cloud operating system" sets the stage for virtualization to fully enter the data center.

REVIEW: Cemaphore Systems’ MailShadow allows for Microsoft Exchange Server or another e-mail system to be synchronized in real-time with an off-site, cloud-based alternative. This provides a real-time backup of critical e-mail, calendar and contact information, while giving users the ability to access the information from anywhere the Internet reaches. However, during tests, eWEEK Labs experienced management and performance problems.

After IBM's failed bid for Sun Microsystems, Oracle is swooping in to pick up Sun. eWEEK Labs looked at Oracle's and Sun's product lines and found more synergy than overlap--much more synergy than with an IBM-Sun matchup. Oracle will get a boost in the hardware, virtualization and operating system categories. What will happen to MySQL under Oracle is a little bit more difficult to guess.

With advances in addressable memory, simultaneous multithreading and I/O handling, Intel's Nehalem microarchitecture allows IT managers to put even more VMs on a single physical system. But there is risk involved with putting too many virtual eggs in one physical basket, and data center managers must look to careful capacity planning, as well as monitoring and reporting tools, to prevent problems.
2009-03-30
eWEEK Labs' analysis of Nehalem, or the Intel Xeon 5500 series, shows that the microprocessor architecture's integrated memory controller, additional memory channel and slew of performance improvements will allow IT managers to consolidate more virtual machines onto fewer physical systems and will allow the virtualization of apps that couldn't be virtualized before.

TECH ANALYSIS: IBM could help its flagging storage business by buying Sun, which has boosted its tape storage portfolio through the StorageTek acquisition and has been innovating throughout its storage line. IBM also would be able to take advantage of the growing desire among many enterprises to migrate their mission-critical applications off costly mainframes and onto a more open platform, such as Sun’s OpenSolaris and Open Storage. And they could use IBM Global Services to do the migration work.

TECH ANALYSIS: IBM has DB2, not to mention Informix, while Sun Microsystems has MySQL. Will one trump the others? eWEEK Labs examines the overlap and synergies between IBM's and Sun's database platforms, and what customers should expect should an acquisition go forward.
2009-03-18
Enterprise IT managers need to be thinking about the product impact of a possible IBM acquisition of Sun. eWEEK Labs takes a look at the areas of synergy--such as database and operating systems--as well as areas of overlap--such as development. In the end, IBM's services model may be the crux of all product decisions.

Building a virtual machine testbed is an important part of any application testing or development work. Testbeds not only determine how an application performs, but also how it fits in an enterprise's overall IT environment. Money may be tight in these difficult economic times, but building such a testbed does not have to be an expensive proposition. eWEEK Labs was able to build a testbed of an OpenFiler iSCSI NAS server and a VMware ESXI virtualization instance using a combination of free software and some hardware found here and there.

Lenovo’s ThinkServer RD120 is a good fit for businesses—including retail chains, restaurants and larger enterprises—that have offices in multiple and dispersed locations. The Lenovo ThinkServer combines well-designed hardware built to save on space and power costs with a complete and solid management platform. The software makes it easy to configure the server centrally and install it in the remote office.

Tech Analysis: Under pressure from the growing mountain of data, enterprises are taking a look at data deduplication as a way of reducing storage costs and increasing efficiency. Vendors such as IBM, EMC, Data Domain and NetApp are offering some form of data deduplication capabilities. But there are questions that need to be answered before an enterprise makes the jump to data deduplication.

Tech Analysis: With vendors such as Microsoft, Novell, VMware, Symantec and Citrix rolling out application virtualization components to their offerings, enterprise IT administrators need to take a look at the technology. The promise of reducing expenses through application virtualization is there, but eWEEK Labs points out that more work needs to be done on the technology to justify the costs and achieve real ROI.

InstallFree Bridge Suite 1.8 makes a stronger argument for application virtualization than do products from more well-known vendors such as Microsoft and Novell. InstallFree's tool offers simple management capabilities and doesn't require components to be installed on the server or end-user systems. Still, InstallFree Bridge Suite 1.8 shares the shortcomings of other app virtualization tools.

Xiotech’s Emprise 7000 SAN solution combines high availability and fault tolerance with intuitive and powerful management capabilities. Enterprises can add storage capacity in a modular fashion, and as an added benefit, Virtual View management software vastly simplifies management of virtual machine storage.

Dabble DB, a Web-based database application from Smallthought Systems, gives enterprise IT administrators a structured database environment while enabling them to do the ad hoc data crunching they normally do in a spreadsheet. Dabble DB makes it easy for users to import data and create views of the tables holding that data, although it needs better health status update capabilities.

Citrix's XenDesktop 2.1 enables enterprises to centralize the operating system and deliver virtual Windows XP or Vista desktops to users not only from Citrix virtualization environments, but also those from VMware and Microsoft. In addition, end users can use anything from thin clients from Wyse or HP to Web-enabled clients to fat-client systems to access the virtual desktops. However, while server virtualization has proved its worth in enterprise data centers, desktop virtualization is not in the same "must-have" category.
