IBM officials address rumors that the IT company will end development of its Cell processor, which forms the basis of several supercomputers and powers such devices as Sony's PlayStation 3 game console. IBM has halted development of the next generation of the Cell chip, but officials say the technology will play a role in future processor platforms, including IBM's upcoming Power7 chips.

Amazon.com says it has increased the Kindle's battery life by up to a week on a single charge, and has incorporated a PDF reader into the e-reader's design. Amazon.com's tweaks come as the e-reader market is gearing up in earnest for the holiday season, with Barnes & Noble claiming that demand for its own Nook e-reader is so strong that units won't ship until after the holidays. Meanwhile, smaller IT startups are also trying to carve off their own pieces of the mobile e-reader market.

The global semiconductor market is expected to exit 2009 with a revenue decline of 12.4 percent, according to iSuppli. But while that will mark one of the most difficult years for the industry, it isn't as bad as iSuppli had predicted earlier in the year, when the forecast was for a revenue fall of more than 20 percent. Intel retains its top spot, and No. 2 supplier Samsung will be the only top 10 supplier to post a profit. AMD's strong performance in the microprocessor space helped the company limit its revenue losses.

Services delivered a solid quarter for HP, generating $8.9 billion in revenue. HP CEO Mark Hurd said the integration of EDS into the company was ahead of schedule, and that HP was able to cut 19,000 jobs in the wake of the EDS purchase in 2008, which helped save on the bottom line. Overall, HP generated $2.4 billion in profit on $30.8 billion in revenue.

Overall PC shipments are expected to be up in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to a new report from Gartner. Falling ASPs, however, have market value on the downhill, and the effects of Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system likely won’t be felt until 2010.

China Mobile will be offering Dell's Mini 3i smartphone by the end of November. The Mini 3i features Google's Android operating system, as well as China Mobile's OPhone platform, a 3.5-inch touch screen and a choice of two colors.

Apple reportedly refused to fix a few customers’ Macs, arguing that the owners' smoking around the machines made the electronics a bio-hazard to Apple employees. Whether or not Apple’s technicians were truly at risk, photos and comments from the online community suggest that smoking around desktops and laptops can indeed physically damage the insides of the devices.

However, one analyst predicts that a PC price war will break out as Dell moves aggressively to take market share away from major competitors such as Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo.

An ombudsman with the European Union says the European Commission erred in its investigation of Intel by failing to take minutes of a 2006 meeting with a Dell executive. The EC in May fined Intel $1.45 billion for anticompetitive practices, but Intel is appealing the ruling. Intel executives have characterized the EC as conducting a biased investigation.

Lenovo's T400s touch-screen model is as solid a laptop as the non-touch-enabled T400s, but a dearth of touch-enabled apps as well as a premium for the touch-screen make the system less than compelling at this time. However, in eWEEK Labs' tests, the system was responsive and even passed the post-lunch smudge test, and the future looks brighter for touch systems when Windows 7's enhanced touch capabilities are considered.
Dell's newest entry into the thin and light category--the Dell E4300--doesn't surpass its rivals in any way. Taken as a whole, the Intel Core 2 Duo-based E4300 is a decent system for midrange users, but it doesn't set any new standards for its class.
In the newest laptop in its ThinkPad line, the T400s, Lenovo has made some nice enhancements that improve usability. There aren't many firsts in the dual-core system, but it should go to the top of any organization's evaluation shortlist.
Tech Analysis: Consumerization and mobilization in computing are fueling a trend of employees using personal PCs in their jobs. Some enterprises are pushing this as a path to saving money, but IT administrators are struggling to find ways to secure corporate data while keeping employees productive. eWEEK Labs looks at some solutions, including application whitelisting, widening administrative rights, and desktop virtualization from such companies as Microsoft, Citrix and VMware.
The Lenovo IdeaPad S10 provides features that some other netbooks don't right now, including WWAN connectivity and a 15-pin monitor jack, but its keyboard can't match that of the HP Mini netbook.
