In the newest laptop in its ThinkPad line, the T400s, Lenovo has made some nice enhancements that improve usability. There aren't many firsts in the dual-core system, but it should go to the top of any organization's evaluation shortlist.

An eWEEK Labs analyst gets technically faced by his father when a discussion about the MiFi mobile hot spot comes up. After some quick thinking (and research), the MiFi as wireless connectivity option gets a big, fat 'no.'

The MiFi 2200 “mobile hot spot” from Verizon provides mobile broadband in the back end and Wi-Fi out the front, giving as many as five users/devices access to the Internet from anywhere. The MiFi behaves like any other Wi-Fi mobile hot spot, although performance may be slower than what you've become accustomed to.

REVIEW: Verizon is offering the HP Mini 1000 Model 1151R netbook with its mobile broadband service. HP netbooks are among the best the Labs has tested, and the premise of built-in broadband makes sense. But there are some trade-offs.

REVIEW: Version 3.1 of the open-source OpenOffice.org productivity suite provides plenty of feature and performance enhancements. The performance of the Calc spreadsheet program has been notably improved, as has rendering of on-screen objects in the Impress presentation app. The Write word processor offers new collaboration functionality.

Anti-virus systems: can't live with them, can't live without them. But that may all change with Windows 7, which improves on and streamlines security measures already baked into Windows operating systems.

REVIEW: Pure Digital Technologies' latest Flip camcorder, the UltraHD, is a good choice for everyday users who just want to capture and share video and don't need lots of bells and whistles. The Flip UltraHD is bigger than its Flip MinoHD sibling, but the UltraHD has more power options, is cheaper and has some nice features, including physical buttons.

eWEEK Labs' early tests of Windows 7 RC 1 show that the operating system installs and runs quickly and efficiently; is highly polished for this stage of development; already supports a wide array of hardware; and is obviously rich with security, connectivity and usability features when compared with either Windows Vista or XP. However, Microsoft's method for dealing with application compatibility--Windows XP Mode for Windows 7, or XPM--leaves something to be desired.

REVIEW: Apple's 17-inch MacBook Pro is the thinnest and lightest notebook in its category, and the system is well-engineered and powerful. It also boasts up to 8 hours of battery life--a very good thing given that the battery is built-in. All of this earns the MacBook Pro eWEEK Labs' Analyst's Choice award.

REVIEW: Ubuntu 9.04, also known as the Jaunty Jackalope, delivers the latest in open-source software and will serve well in both desktop and server roles. Ubuntu 9.04 also comes with a preview version of Eucalyptus, which allows organizations to build their own Amazon EC2-style compute clouds, as well as a remix version for running Jaunty Jackalope on netbooks.

The best course to going green is often sticking with what you have for as long as you can, but that goes against a geek's grain. eWEEK Labs' Jim Rapoza offers some advice for tech enthusiasts who want to be environmentally friendly.

REVIEW: Sun Microsystems' no-cost xVM VirtualBox, which enables guest virtual machines to run on a desktop computer, now offers support for Open Virtualization Format, host-only networking that broadens how virtual machines communicate, folder sharing, and OpenGL and 3D graphics support. With these new features, xVM VirtualBox 2.2 is an even more compelling alternative to the $189 VMware Workstation.

Macs are making their way into the enterprise, and eWEEK Labs' Cameron Sturdevant wants to stay one step ahead of them by "going Apple." A lifelong Microsoft/PC user, Sturdevant is making the switch to be able to articulate the real benefits, drawbacks and costs of integrating the Apple/Mac platform into your organization. His journey begins here.

With its SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11, Novell is backing up its claim that the Linux distribution is ready for businesses to use. For enterprises looking for a Linux alternative to Microsoft Windows, Novell's SLED 11 is a solid option, with features and support options the address concerns for larger companies. It offers strong basic features and interoperability with key Windows tools. However, Novell's desktop Linux OS is too limited in the software packages it offers, especially when compared with its community-centric relative, OpenSUSE.

Savi Office, from Plantronics, offers more than a wireless headset solution with simultaneous connection to both a desk phone and PC. Savi Office also offers the PerSono software suite for controlling device behavior and for bridging content between communications channel. However, the flexible solution comes at a steep price and is not yet enterprise-ready. And it can only be used with Microsoft Windows-based PCs, though Plantronics says users of Apple Macs will be able to use the Savi Office devices as headsets.

Tech Analysis: Consumerization and mobilization in computing are fueling a trend of employees using personal PCs in their jobs. Some enterprises are pushing this as a path to saving money, but IT administrators are struggling to find ways to secure corporate data while keeping employees productive. eWEEK Labs looks at some solutions, including application whitelisting, widening administrative rights, and desktop virtualization from such companies as Microsoft, Citrix and VMware.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S10 provides features that some other netbooks don't right now, including WWAN connectivity and a 15-pin monitor jack, but its keyboard can't match that of the HP Mini netbook.

Netbook pioneer Asus provides a solid entry into the category with the Eee PC 1000H, but the keyboard may be a deal breaker.

The keyboard makes the HP Mini series the "Cadillac" of netbooks, but it still can’t rival that of full-sized notebooks or desktops.

LANguard 9.0 is the latest iteration of GFI’s network vulnerability and patch management software. The tool is most useful to SMBs; larger enterprises will want to find something more scalable. The latest version can tell whether a device scanned is real or virtual and can launch a remote desktop connection to a scanned Windows client with one click.
