As eWEEK looks back at its 25-year history, eWEEK Labs analysts considered the most important innovations in their respective coverage areas. For Senior Analyst Andrew Garcia, the choice was a no-brainer: Wi-Fi, a "gargantuan success story."

VMware Fusion 3 enables the use of Windows, Linux and Mac virtual machines on a physical Mac system. Fusion 3 is competitive with Parallels Desktop Switch to Mac Edition and Sun VirtualBox, with a slight lead in terms of day-to-day operations. While VMware Fusion 3 is aimed at individual users, the product is a worthwhile choice for IT departments that are switching PC systems to Macs.

The Novatel MiFi 2200 is a small device that provides 3G Internet access and Wi-Fi connectivity for as many as five wireless users. eWEEK Labs' tests show that the device is an attractive option for providing mobile Internet access for temporary offices, traveling work teams, meetings and many other situations where an Internet connection could be hard to come by. During tests, the broadband connection was about what you would expect, but Wi-Fi and battery performance were surprising.

With the 802.11n standard officially ratified by the IEEE, the Wi-Fi Alliance has lived up to its promise by grandfathering all Wi-Fi Certified 802.11n Draft 2.0-labeled products to its new certification, called Wi-Fi Certified N, while simultaneously trying to reduce some of confusion that will arise from the dizzying array of feature configurations that comprise 802.11n.

Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard deserves a top spot on IT managers' evaluation list for system updates in creative departments where Macs predominate. Snow Leopard Server could be considered for general enterprise deployment, but its built-in creative and communications functions make the operating system best suited for use where high-value content is produced. Of note are the updates to the Podcast Producer, Wiki and Mobile Access components.

Parallels Desktop 4.0 Switch to Mac edition makes it simple to convert a physical PC--including applications and data--to a Windows virtual machine running on a Mac. Parallels further eases the transition by including several hours of helpful instructional demonstrations that show step-by-step how to perform tasks in the Mac world.

Lenovo's T400s touch-screen model is as solid a laptop as the non-touch-enabled T400s, but a dearth of touch-enabled apps as well as a premium for the touch-screen make the system less than compelling at this time. However, in eWEEK Labs' tests, the system was responsive and even passed the post-lunch smudge test, and the future looks brighter for touch systems when Windows 7's enhanced touch capabilities are considered.

Dell's newest entry into the thin and light category--the Dell E4300--doesn't surpass its rivals in any way. Taken as a whole, the Intel Core 2 Duo-based E4300 is a decent system for midrange users, but it doesn't set any new standards for its class.

In the wake of analyst Andrew Garcia's Windows 7 64-bit migration woes, Labs' Jason Brooks considers the bumps he's encountered on his own journey to 64-bit on the Ubuntu Linux machines he runs at home and work.
2009-09-01
A move to Windows 7 was driven less by the new operating system's features and more by the 64-bit performance promise, but unexpected issues forced unwanted compromises.

Windows 7 is a relatively modest improvement over Windows Vista in terms of performance, features and security. But, with an aging XP unable to take advantage of the latest hardware and networking technologies, the time is coming for most enterprises to consider a Windows client upgrade. eWEEK Labs put Windows 7 RTM through its paces and found some compelling usability improvements, features that will work best (or only) with Windows Server 2008 R2 and some mixed security messages.

Processors with multiple cores are commonplace these days, creating a need for new tools that make parallel programming easier. To help programmers write code that makes use of multiple cores comes Intel Parallel Studio, which works hand-in-hand with Microsoft Visual Studio. During eWEEK Labs' tests, Intel Parallel Studio effectively identified and helped remediate problems in code, enabling developers to fine-tune programs for use with multiple cores.

In the newest laptop in its ThinkPad line, the T400s, Lenovo has made some nice enhancements that improve usability. There aren't many firsts in the dual-core system, but it should go to the top of any organization's evaluation shortlist.

An eWEEK Labs analyst gets technically faced by his father when a discussion about the MiFi mobile hot spot comes up. After some quick thinking (and research), the MiFi as wireless connectivity option gets a big, fat 'no.'
2009-06-25
The MiFi 2200 “mobile hot spot” from Verizon provides mobile broadband in the back end and Wi-Fi out the front, giving as many as five users/devices access to the Internet from anywhere. The MiFi behaves like any other Wi-Fi mobile hot spot, although performance may be slower than what you've become accustomed to.

REVIEW: Verizon is offering the HP Mini 1000 Model 1151R netbook with its mobile broadband service. HP netbooks are among the best the Labs has tested, and the premise of built-in broadband makes sense. But there are some trade-offs.

REVIEW: Version 3.1 of the open-source OpenOffice.org productivity suite provides plenty of feature and performance enhancements. The performance of the Calc spreadsheet program has been notably improved, as has rendering of on-screen objects in the Impress presentation app. The Write word processor offers new collaboration functionality.

Anti-virus systems: can't live with them, can't live without them. But that may all change with Windows 7, which improves on and streamlines security measures already baked into Windows operating systems.

Tech Analysis: Consumerization and mobilization in computing are fueling a trend of employees using personal PCs in their jobs. Some enterprises are pushing this as a path to saving money, but IT administrators are struggling to find ways to secure corporate data while keeping employees productive. eWEEK Labs looks at some solutions, including application whitelisting, widening administrative rights, and desktop virtualization from such companies as Microsoft, Citrix and VMware.
The Lenovo IdeaPad S10 provides features that some other netbooks don't right now, including WWAN connectivity and a 15-pin monitor jack, but its keyboard can't match that of the HP Mini netbook.
