Server Virtualization
The Windows Server Virtualization Platform
Hardware virtualization introduces significant new hardware requirements and new management, support, and licensing challenges. Join presenters from Unisys on December 10 as they outline the hardware virtualization software that Microsoft offers, looks at the tools Microsoft provides for managing virtualized servers, and examines licensing and support implications of deploying hardware virtualization.

Green IT and Green Computing Technology

Green IT, also known as Green Computing, is the movement towards a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective use of power and production in technology. The crux of Green IT is to double or triple the bottom line investment costs by converting existing structures and systems to this more conservative mode of operation in green computing. Some common Green computing concepts are Virtualization, Recycling, Telecommuting and Power Management through the use of efficient devices. So help save the environment, save yourself some money and "go green" with green IT computing.

With System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, Microsoft adds support for VMware ESX Infrastructure virtualization technology. The move by Microsoft with its Hyper-V virtualization technology is a break from its past, where Microsoft usually let third parties manage non-Microsoft software. Now Microsoft can manage VMware virtualization technology.

Even before President-elect Barack Obama takes office, House and Senate Democrats are making sweeping changes of their own, deposing old school chairmen on key technology committees. From energy policy to network neutrality, new chairmen Henry Waxman and Jay Rockefeller lean more tech than telecom, more Silicon Valley than Rust Belt. Hold the euphoria, though, as change often brings unexpected results.

Data center power consumption continues to rise. And as such, the cost for electricity to power and cool equipment is shooting through the roof. With the worsening economic climate, there is great interest in reining in these costs. Increasingly, organizations are turning to intelligent power management systems that allocate electricity dynamically to save money and reduce waste. These systems collect real-time information about data center equipment power consumption, utilization rates, and temperatures. Having this information, managers can then optimize the use of electricity and cut their power costs.
News
With data volumes growing at 60 percent to 70 percent per year (Gartner's educated guess), and power costs expected to increase by 15 percent (the power industry's educated guess), how does an IT manager make peace with the very real possibility that he or she won't be able to buy as much power and capacity this next fiscal year?
News
Current macroeconomic conditions will impact data center budgets--along with everything else--big time in 2009. It follows that data center and IT managers will need to get more from their facilities with less money available. Here's a primer on where to find the low-hanging fruit of power savings.
News
Given the current state of the economy and the yawning federal deficit, the efficiency and cost-savings associated with cloud computing are prompting U.S. federal IT agencies to flirt with the cloud platform. Slowly, of course, since it is the government, after all.
News
The announcement this week that Citigroup will eliminate 52,000 jobs and with other large companies also looking at layoffs, IT departments are going to be forced to deal with hundreds and even thousands of desktops and notebooks that are no longer at use. While the task is daunting, there are several options out there for IT administrators, including recycling older PCs, repurposing desktops and notebooks for those employees who remain, and even donating the unused desktops and laptops.
News
The new energy ratings system covers all cellphone chargers currently sold by cellphone makers Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG Electronics. The cellphone industry has become the world's top consumer electronics business by volume and has drawn criticism from environmentalists.

To cut data center power consumption, companies are trying virtualization, the use of energy-efficient CPUs, and improving airflow and heat removal through better data center design. As these approaches are adopted, attention is now focusing on other areas for savings. One area in particular that is getting much attention is how to improve the energy efficiency of Ethernet.

Greening one's data center is a strategy that enables an enterprise to improve profitability while reducing expenses, contribute positively to the overall community and be better positioned in the global information economy. Knowledge Center contributor Peter Melerud explains how to green the data center in your enterprise.

President-elect Barack Obama brings a decidedly different technology agenda to the White House than President Bush did eight years ago. Widely considered the most tech-savvy president ever elected, Obama sees an activist government – tinkering here, readjusting there and spending here, here and here – as the path to innovation and the future.

Well-known rocker Neil Young and Sun Microsystems' James Gosling, the creator of Java, are working on a Java-enabled, hybrid-electric Lincoln convertible to compete for the Automotive X Prize, a competition for 100 MPG vehicles. The Linc Volt, Young's entry in the X Automotive Prize competition, is a 1959 Lincoln Continental Mk IV that has been repowered with a new series-hybrid system and runs on electricity produced by a generator powered by natural gas.

The Linc Volt, Neil Young and Java creator James Gosling's entry into the X Automotive Prize competition, is a classic 1959 Lincoln Continental Mk IV that has been repowered with a new series-hybrid system and now runs on electricity produced by a natural-gas generator. Java technology powers sensors that monitor performance elements of the Linc Volt and display the results on a touch-screen panel as the hybrid car travels down the road.

Data center managers can achieve substantial electrical savings annually if they implement a list of 11 best practices, according to IT analyst company Gartner. Most of these projects could be completed with little or no budget or effort, says Gartner researcher Paul McGuckin, and these green IT efforts can get formerly unconnected corporate departments together on the same page.
