Intel is the dominant microprocessor vendor in the world, holding an almost 80 percent share of the world's chip market, according to research firm iSuppli. The company's chips run in most PCs and servers today, and in recent years—thanks in large part to Intel's intense rivalry with Advanced Micro Devices—processors have become smaller, more powerful and more feature-rich. Gone are the days when upgrading chips meant simply cranking up the clock speed. For example, now Intel, AMD and other chips makers—including Sun Microsystems and IBM—are rapidly growing the number of processing cores on each chip. Intel and AMD each have chips with six cores, and both are planning to aggressively grow those numbers in the near future. The processors also now offer such features as power management, on-board virtualization capabilities and increased memory bandwidth, all of which were highlighted in Intel's launch of its "Nehalem" architecture and AMD's rollout of its "Istanbul" Opteron chip. On its Website, Intel recently offered a high-level glimpse of what goes into the making of a CPU. Here are some of the slides from the graphics presentation, which show only the most important steps among the hundreds that are needed to build a processor. Intel's full presentation can be viewed here.

REVIEW: The well-priced Apple Xserve rack-mount server has been significantly upgraded and is now among the first servers to run the latest generation of quad-core Intel Xeon processors, code-named Nehalem. However, the bundled Apple OS X operating system, while feature-rich, makes the Xserve most appropriate for use in departments where users work on Apple Mac clients.
Lantronix’s ManageLinx offers secure and simple remote monitoring, configuration and management of network devices—sometimes, eWEEK Labs found. The Lantronix solution was relatively easy to set up and showed promise in helping enterprises support remote servers and network devices in branch offices, including Windows and Linux workstations. However, at times the GUI management was confusing and flaky, and while ManageLinx managed a host of devices using different protocols, it stumbled when trying to view streaming video.
Commentary: Cisco’s Nexus family of switches, as well as its new blade servers and virtualization plans, are key drivers of the company’s Unified Computing System, eWEEK Labs says. Cisco is looking to revolutionize the way the data center operates. While the technology is said to be compatible with existing products, there is sure to be a significant upfront cost for enterprises looking to get in on Cisco’s vision.
Lenovo’s ThinkServer RD120 is a good fit for businesses—including retail chains, restaurants and larger enterprises—that have offices in multiple and dispersed locations. The Lenovo ThinkServer combines well-designed hardware built to save on space and power costs with a complete and solid management platform. The software makes it easy to configure the server centrally and install it in the remote office.
eWEEK Labs' look at virtual desktop infrastructure finds benefits, including cost and "green" savings, that should cause enterprise IT managers to take notice.
