But while that will mark one of the most difficult years for the industry, it wasn’t as bad as iSuppli had predicted earlier in the year, when the forecast was for a revenue fall of more than 20 percent. Intel retained its top spot, and number-two supplier Samsung will be the only top-10 supplier to post a profit. AMD’s strong performance in the microprocessor space helped the company limit its revenue losses.

When disaster strikes a data center, ultimately it doesn't matter what caused the problem. What does matter is how quickly and reliably the problem can be resolved to minimize business damage. Prevention efforts, including standard backup policies and redundant systems, continue to be important, but they're not enough. To effectively minimize risk, CEOs and their IT leaders must turn their business-continuity efforts toward reliable recovery from the unforeseen. Some companies are pioneering new approaches to smart IT disaster recovery. Working with these companies, Accenture's Edward Minyard has identified seven critical points common to the new strategies. Minyard is a certified continuity manager with real-world experience that includes 18 months in New Orleans, beginning immediately after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, as a key member of the Emergency Operations Center.

eWEEK Labs' exclusive hands-on tests show that Cisco's UCS (Unified Computing System) combines high-end hardware with integrated management software to create a data center computing platform capable of hosting high-value applications, despite some Version 1.0 flaws.
Windows 7 DirectAccess is being billed by Microsoft as the "great extender"--a next-generation access technology designed to connect remote clients in the age of the vanishing network perimeter. One of the primary deliverables borne of Microsoft’s “better together” development strategy--which leverages the simultaneous release of the new Windows 7 client OS and the new Windows 2008 Server R2 server OS--DirectAccess worked well in eWEEK Labs' tests. However, system and security requirements may make DirectAccess just a pipe dream for many organizations right now.
The Panda MOP SAAS server and workstation anti-malware solution allows systems to be managed and protected from a central location, regardless of whether they are inside or outside the company network. This saves on the upfront cost of buying and installing a central management server and the ongoing cost of maintaining that server. Panda MOP also leverages true cloud-based functionality for analysis of suspicious files. In tests, malware detection worked well, at least when it came to viruses and Trojans.
Parallels Desktop 4.0 Switch to Mac edition makes it simple to convert a physical PC--including applications and data--to a Windows virtual machine running on a Mac. Parallels further eases the transition by including several hours of helpful instructional demonstrations that show step-by-step how to perform tasks in the Mac world.
