Microsoft issued an official response to news of Google releasing its Chrome Operating System to open source for developers. Although the Chrome OS will not be available to end users for at least another year, Microsoft is already citing Windows 7 as a more viable alternative for working on both the Web and the desktop. During a demo, Google's Sundar Pichai showed how Chrome OS booted up on an Asus Eee PC netbook in 7 seconds, with 3 more seconds to log onto an application. Chrome OS had the look and feel of the Chrome Web browser, which has 40 million regular users. Chrome OS was designed with speed, simplicity and security in mind.

NEWS ANALYSIS: The Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris present a lot for the typical smartphone user to like, including crisp call quality and excellent battery life. A few kinks aside, the Google Android operating system seems versatile and able to handle most minute-to-minute needs in the productivity, communication and entertainment qualities. Despite a few form-factor issues that could make the smartphones off-putting to some users, both Droids come closest to being the long-predicted "iPhone killer."

O'Reilly says Microsoft's recent deals to index Twitter tweets and use Wolfram Alpha's APIs for computational data show a shift in its willingness to work with other Web companies. Moreover, the Windows Azure cloud computing operating system is designed to work with open-source technology.

A lighter version of the Motorola Droid, the Droid Eris runs the Google Android operating system and features a 3.2-inch touch screen, a virtual keyboard, access to Android Marketplace and various Google applications such as Gmail, and a 5-megapixel camera.

Whether these smartphones powered by Google Android will be true "iPhone killers" remains to be seen, but many consumers will find the variety of features and the graphical user interface appealing. For business users, the Droid Eris presents some useful tools, including support for Office Outlook Mobile and Microsoft Exchange with Direct Push, as well as the capacity for lightweight document editing.

However, a powerful pair of trends--driven almost as aggressively by Microsoft as by the rest of the industry--are working to expand the viability not only of Linux but of Mac OS X, Solaris and other platforms yet unknown or uninvented: a shift to Web-based applications and "WaaR," or Windows as a Runtime.

Novell's OpenSUSE 11.2, which is packed with the latest and greatest of what the open-source software world has to offer, sets itself apart from Linux rivals with its focus on power users. This philosophy makes OpenSUSE more discoverable--but also more confusing--than its peers.
PC Week's (now eWEEK's) birth year—1984—was a busy one for technology. One platform that began to take shape at that time was focused not on hardware or software but on licensing. Richard Stallman quit his job at MIT to start the GNU project, an effort to produce a clone of the Unix operating system to be distributed under a license that would ensure users' freedom to run, modify and redistribute the software. The open-source model has since driven much innovation in enterprise technology.
Fedora, Red Hat's leading-edge Linux-based OS, has hit a beta milestone. eWEEK Labs' tests show that Fedora 12 will provide the latest and greatest versions of popular open-source applications, as well as features that strengthen not only Fedora but also Linux distributions in general. In particular, Fedora 12 advances the state of Linux system privilege management on multiple fronts and exhibits continued progress in virtualization.
The beta of Ubuntu 9.10—or Karmic Koala as it's also known—offers the core open-source updates you would expect. But it also provides important enhancements in the areas of disk encryption, tightened system permissions and cloud service integration—all of which combine to make Ubuntu even more attractive as the Linux distro of choice on the desktop.
It's been a long, hot summer in the open-source world, particularly in the regions where open source and Microsoft butt up against each other. In the midst of this acrimony, Microsoft has launched the Codeplex Foundation, which is aimed at enabling "the exchange of code and understanding among software companies and open-source communities." Can the foundation cool things down?
