Chrome OS looks sleek and feels fast, according to screenshots from Engadget, but what do we really know about the Chrome OS experience? Not much, though a source familiar with Google's application development says Chrome Web browser will essentially leverage Chrome OS to run Web apps really fast. That sounds all well and good, but what will this ultimately mean for Linux distributions?

News
NEWS ANALYSIS: Google's new operating system, called Chrome OS, is exciting consumers and those interested in netbooks, but does it have what it takes to take on the enterprise? If Google does target the business world, it will then have to take on Microsoft head-on. We take a look at what Google Chrome OS holds for the enterprise.
News
Microsoft could potentially face a threat in the newly announced Google Chrome OS, intended to operate on mininotebooks, known popularly as "netbooks." If netbooks continue to increase their share of the overall PC market, some analysts predict Google’s OS could seize a respectable OS market share within three to five years. Google has also suggested that Chrome OS will eventually be able to power full-size desktop systems, an idea that directly threatens Windows.

NEW YORK—T-Mobile's new phone, the MyTouch 3G, is a direct follow-up to its T-Mobile G1 smartphone, and like the T-Mobile G1 also features the Google Android mobile operating system. Users can download multiple applications from Android Market and customize menus and other elements to fit their personal style. In addition, several Google features such as Google Maps and YouTube have been preinstalled on the MyTouch 3G smartphone.
News
Analysts say they need to see more of the Linux-based Google Chrome OS before they believe it will eventually prove disruptive to Microsoft Windows. While Google's marketing push for the platform is half-hearted, the product has the potential to give a significant boost to the nascent cloud computing market as Google seeks to extend its Web search and Web services across the Internet.

Version 3.0 of Sun's xVM VirtualBox desktop virtualization tool adds support for multiple guest processors--a major feature addition that, when considered alongside the product's low cost (free) and broad host platform support, is certain to give VMware Workstation a run for its money.

VirtualBox, Sun's open-source, cross-platform desktop virtualization product, now boasts support for multiple guest processors. Starting with Version 3.0, which began shipping on June 30, Sun's virtualization tool can expose up to 32 virtual processors to its guest instances. The rest of the changes in VirtualBox 3.0 are primarily bug fixes and tweaks. Even so, the "non-free" workstation products from VMware and Parallels will seem a little less shiny now that VirtualBox is sporting its SMP chops.

REVIEWS
REVIEW: Fedora 11 provides a sneak peak at what's coming in the more staid and stable Red Hat Enterprise Linux. During tests, eWEEK Labs found that the biggest improvements in Fedora 11 come in the area of virtualization, although Fedora still lags systems from VMware in functionality and polish. Fedora will also serve well in desktop roles, but will need more care and feeding than other desktop Linux distros.
REVIEW: Ubuntu 9.04, also known as the Jaunty Jackalope, delivers the latest in open-source software and will serve well in both desktop and server roles. Ubuntu 9.04 also comes with a preview version of Eucalyptus, which allows organizations to build their own Amazon EC2-style compute clouds, as well as a remix version for running Jaunty Jackalope on netbooks.
CentOS is based on Red Hat's Enterprise Linux source packages and shares in recent RHEL virtualization, application development, security and storage improvements. Many of the enhancements in CentOS 5.3 come in the area of virtualization, targeted largely at scalability on large host machines.
The Linux Foundation and Novell team up to deliver Build Service, which will aid in the creation of software packages for CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Mandriva, OpenSUSE, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise and Ubuntu.
REVIEW: Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 does a good job of bringing together an organization's equipment and code to meet a variety of needs. SLES 11 is a solid virtualization platform and serves in its traditional role as host for Linux and open-source applications, but also has added Novell support for Microsoft .NET applications. However, when compared with more narrowly focused rivals, SLES disappoints in some roles.
