Microsoft has integrated Bing into Hotmail, with a Quick Add feature that uses Bing search to pull video, maps, images and other content into users’ e-mails. Since its June 3 release, Microsoft has been aggressively pushing Bing through a number of channels in a bid to claim some search-engine market share away from arch-rivals Google and Yahoo.

Research by Symantec MessageLabs shows the amount of spam that contains links masked via URL shortening services has jumped dramatically in the past few days. While services like TinyURL and Cligs are popular for legitimate users, people should treat shortened URLs with at least as much caution as other links, security researchers say.

Regulators with the Federal Trade Commission approve Nokia Siemens' bid to buy two business units from Nortel for $650 million. Nortel has been under bankruptcy protection since early 2009, and is looking to sell off various businesses. At the same time, Nortel continues to build out its unified communications capabilities, including the latest release of its Communication Server 1000.

After three decades, current owner AOL decides to pull the plug on CompuServe Classic, formerly one of the Internet's premier service providers. Although its forums and other services once attracted hundreds of thousands of users, CompuServe eventually lost ground to services such as AOL and as its subscriber base migrated from dial-up services to broadband. AOL plans to port CompuServe's e-mail subscribers to a new system.

The OffiSync plug-in, which marries Google Apps, Docs and search engine functionality with Microsoft Office documents, is coming to enterprise users. For $10 per user, per year, businesses will be able to bring Microsoft Office documents into the cloud, saving them for collaboration in Google Apps. The tool comes as vendors grapple with how to expose more on-premises users to cloud computing.

Also, Fairchild Semiconductor dumps Lotus Notes for Google Apps. With these moves, Google hopes more business customers will choose its pay-for GAPE service over suites from Microsoft, IBM, Cisco and others.

Users will be able to do research on Yahoo Search and save links and other content in a notepad within the search application instead of juggling multiple methods of annotation. The move is Yahoo's latest bid to better compete with Web services powers Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter.

Facebook will generate $500 million in revenue in 2009, says Netscape founder Marc Andreessen, who serves on the social networking site's board. With its growing base of 225 million users, Facebook has publicly suggested that its primary focus will be on expanding its community as opposed to figuring out the most ideal models for revenue generation. Andreessen also says he believes that Facebook has the potential to generate billions of dollars in revenue in coming years.

Microsoft Internet Explorer's share of the browser market has fallen for versions 6 and 7 over the past year, with IE 8 steadily rising over the past few months. At the same time, Firefox 3.0 gained market share before leveling off within the past month, while Safari, Chrome and other browsers occupy single-digit territory, according to a new report by StatCounter.

Apple's mobile devices have powered its bottom line and prestige, with its iPhone 3GS smartphone selling over 1 million units in its first three days of release, and over a billion downloads from its App Store.

REVIEW: The LifeSize Room 200 system provides organizations with impressive high-definition videoconferencing and the ability to natively host multiparty conferences. Different levels of HD-quality videoconferencing will accommodate various bandwidth needs.
REVIEW: Polycom’s QDX 6000 video conferencing units are not HD-capable, but they are easy to set up and configure, and offer many options for adding content. At $3,999, the QDX 6000--which leverages H.323--is a compelling choice for smaller offices or businesses.
