New smartphones and mobile operating systems have drawn another sizable wave of consumers to intelligent smartphones. These platforms provide more productivity potential than ever before, but there are still gaps in the kind of security and management capabilities necessary for enterprise use. eWEEK Labs examines how to make the right choices now to meet future needs.

During eWEEK Labs' review of the iPhone 3.0 software upgrade, the remote wipe feature worked great. Unfortunately, the restore feature did not. But a trip to the Apple Store brought surprisingly fast relief.

Open-source software allows a great deal of flexibility and configurability, and can help organizations avoid vendor lock-in, but it has to be the right open-source software. Open-source enterprise applications such as Zimbra that provide hosted, on-premises and independent options are the most attractive.

REVIEW: The Palm Pre has exceptional design, aesthetics and usability. However, with only one device available on only one network, its corporate use will be limited. In addition, based on eWEEK Labs' tests, battery performance could be a problem.

Gmail pretty much has what it takes to satisfy individual requirements, but Google needs to free Gmail and Google Apps from its own data centers before the enterprise will really sit up and take notice.

Video conferencing is traditonally touted as a money-saving technology in a down economy. Companies can slash their travel budgets by using video conferencing, but meeting with partners and suppliers outside of your own network requires interoperability of video conferencing systems. eWEEK Labs tests the ability of two very different systems to work together.

REVIEW: Version 3.1 of the open-source OpenOffice.org productivity suite provides plenty of feature and performance enhancements. The performance of the Calc spreadsheet program has been notably improved, as has rendering of on-screen objects in the Impress presentation app. The Write word processor offers new collaboration functionality.

REVIEW: The LifeSize Room 200 system provides organizations with impressive high-definition videoconferencing and the ability to natively host multiparty conferences. Different levels of HD-quality videoconferencing will accommodate various bandwidth needs.

REVIEW: Polycom’s QDX 6000 video conferencing units are not HD-capable, but they are easy to set up and configure, and offer many options for adding content. At $3,999, the QDX 6000--which leverages H.323--is a compelling choice for smaller offices or businesses.

Twitter and Facebook provide a plethora of efficient collaboration and messaging capabilities, but businesses have been hesitant to officially use these services in-house for security and control issues. Socialcast, Socialtext and Huddle are three services designed to offer the features of Twitter, Facebook and other Web 2.0 technologies in a way that is palatable to the enterprise.

REVIEW: Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server ties together BlackBerry devices and management infrastructure with Google’s for-pay e-mail services. However, in the BlackBerry’s native e-mail application, Google can’t offer all the services and features users have come to expect from Gmail.

REVIEW: eWEEK Labs' tests of Research In Motion's answer to Apple's App Store--BlackBerry App World--show that the RIM mobile device store provides a satisfactory experience but doesn't do enough to help users find relevant applications. Also, the store's reliance on PayPal for payment may be limiting.

REVIEW: Cemaphore Systems’ MailShadow allows for Microsoft Exchange Server or another e-mail system to be synchronized in real-time with an off-site, cloud-based alternative. This provides a real-time backup of critical e-mail, calendar and contact information, while giving users the ability to access the information from anywhere the Internet reaches. However, during tests, eWEEK Labs experienced management and performance problems.

REVIEW: Microsoft's Exchange Server 2010, which eWEEK Labs tested in its Beta 1 incarnation, takes on its cloud-based e-mail rivals with a new Outlook Web Access interface that adds both richness and interoperability with non-Microsoft browsers such as Mozilla's Firefox and Apple's Safari. At the same time, Microsoft has bolstered the management capabilities relied upon by Exchange's core enterprise audience.

Despite current iPhone limitations, Skype 1.0.1 for Apple iPhone performed well in eWEEK Labs' tests, providing most of Skype’s functionality--including instant message chats, presence and profile editing--on Wi-Fi, EDGE or (most likely) 3G. Voice calls are limited to Wi-Fi, but that can be a plus, depending on AT&T network coverage in your area. Next up is Skype support for (some) BlackBerry devices.

The new BlackBerry Curve 8900 smartphone, built by RIM for T-Mobile, combines GPS, Wi-Fi, global calling, a full QWERTY keyboard, location-based services and new browser in a sleeker, thinner package. However, the enhancements in the new BlackBerry Curve won’t be enough to convince all current Curve owners to give up their older BlackBerry smartphones.

Unison Server and Desktop unified communications software offers a good, basic UC experience, but lacks too many features to be useful to enterprises with advanced UC needs. The Unison software doesn't have extensibility to mobile device or applications, doesn't offer collaboration between users and has limited conferencing abilities. But with integrated VOIP, IM, presence, e-mail and calendaring, it delivers an experience similar to Microsoft Office and Communicator merged together. And the best part -- Unison Server and Desktop is free, though with a catch.
