The 802.11n standard's performance and compatibility with older gear make it a no-brainer upgrade.

RIM's BlackBerry Bold 9700 combines the solid horsepower and good quality that characterized the original Bold 9000 with a form factor similar to other recent BlackBerry releases. The Bold 9700--versions of which are available from T-Mobile and AT&T--works in concert with the latest enterprise back-end software to add more features for enterprise users, although some of those features are a little kludgy.

As eWEEK looks back at its 25-year history, eWEEK Labs analysts considered the most important innovations in their respective coverage areas. For Senior Analyst Andrew Garcia, the choice was a no-brainer: Wi-Fi, a "gargantuan success story."

The BlackBerry Storm2 9550 provides reliable performance, touch-screen technology that delivers new on-screen capabilities, and more connectivity options both domestically and abroad. The Storm2 9550 is also the first device RIM has shipped with the BlackBerry OS 5, which adds a number of enhancements.

The Novatel MiFi 2200 is a small device that provides 3G Internet access and Wi-Fi connectivity for as many as five wireless users. eWEEK Labs' tests show that the device is an attractive option for providing mobile Internet access for temporary offices, traveling work teams, meetings and many other situations where an Internet connection could be hard to come by. During tests, the broadband connection was about what you would expect, but Wi-Fi and battery performance were surprising.

eWEEK Labs tested Microsoft's new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system on the AT&T Pure device and found that while Version 6.5 is definitely an improvement over previous iterations of Windows Mobile, it has too many vestiges of the past.

With the 802.11n standard officially ratified by the IEEE, the Wi-Fi Alliance has lived up to its promise by grandfathering all Wi-Fi Certified 802.11n Draft 2.0-labeled products to its new certification, called Wi-Fi Certified N, while simultaneously trying to reduce some of confusion that will arise from the dizzying array of feature configurations that comprise 802.11n.

Lenovo's T400s touch-screen model is as solid a laptop as the non-touch-enabled T400s, but a dearth of touch-enabled apps as well as a premium for the touch-screen make the system less than compelling at this time. However, in eWEEK Labs' tests, the system was responsive and even passed the post-lunch smudge test, and the future looks brighter for touch systems when Windows 7's enhanced touch capabilities are considered.

T-Mobile’s MyTouch 3G with Google is only an incremental step up from last year’s G1 with Google. The hardware is sleek and comfortable in the hand, but the new ActiveSync support was a colossal disappointment in eWEEK Labs’ tests, and, overall, the MyTouch 3G--available for T-Mobile--lacks direction and purpose.

Apple's iPhone OS 3.1 with the updated iTunes 9 provides only a few new features, but frequent App Store users and those using the iPhone device with Microsoft Exchange Server will appreciate the update.

For many companies, an unlocked, unprovisioned phone makes good financial and support sense. Meanwhile, the federal government is scrutinizing deals that lock users into buying a specific phone only from a specific carrier (think iPhone and AT&T). All of this means that unprovisioned smartphones may be more widely available in the future. eWEEK Labs examines the reasons for and against going with an unprovisioned phone, and provides a list of possibilities should the latter be right for your company.

Review: BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 provides server high availability, a new Web interface, improved deployment status visibility and role-based administration. eWEEK Labs' tests of BES 5.0 for Microsoft Exchange show that the updated platform will simplify day-to-day mobile device management and allow more effective delegation of tasks among front-line and second-tier administrators.

Why would Apple deny customers the Google Voice functionality and risk the ire of the FCC? eWEEK Labs' Andrew Garcia suspects it's because Apple is building a similar service for MobileMe.

Available for both the Sprint and Verizon networks, the BlackBerry Tour does not break new smartphone ground. However, it packs many of the modern features and capabilities users have come to expect from a smartphone, and all the management and e-mail prowess mobile administrators expect from a BlackBerry. The device can be used internationally, but at the expense of Wi-Fi capabilities--a frustrating trade-off.

New smartphones and mobile operating systems have drawn another sizable wave of consumers to intelligent smartphones. These platforms provide more productivity potential than ever before, but there are still gaps in the kind of security and management capabilities necessary for enterprise use. eWEEK Labs examines how to make the right choices now to meet future needs.

If there's a mobile device festooned with as many radios, input options, software sources and configuration menus as Nokia has managed to cram into the N97, eWEEK Labs has never seen it. But the N97's many features start to shine with continued use, and the form factor is sturdy and pleasingly portable. The price, though--$700--is a tough pill to swallow.

REVIEW: The Apple iPhone provides the best, lag-free performance of any iPhone, as well as native voice dialing, compass capabilities and support for Bluetooth 2.1. But many of Apple's latest and greatest features can be found in the iPhone 3.0 software upgrade, which is available for all previous iPhone models. eWEEK Labs tests the iPhone 3GS to determine whether the device and software improvements above and beyond the iPhone 3.0 upgrade are worth it.

In the newest laptop in its ThinkPad line, the T400s, Lenovo has made some nice enhancements that improve usability. There aren't many firsts in the dual-core system, but it should go to the top of any organization's evaluation shortlist.

An eWEEK Labs analyst gets technically faced by his father when a discussion about the MiFi mobile hot spot comes up. After some quick thinking (and research), the MiFi as wireless connectivity option gets a big, fat 'no.'
2009-06-25
The MiFi 2200 “mobile hot spot” from Verizon provides mobile broadband in the back end and Wi-Fi out the front, giving as many as five users/devices access to the Internet from anywhere. The MiFi behaves like any other Wi-Fi mobile hot spot, although performance may be slower than what you've become accustomed to.
