If there's a mobile device festooned with as many radios, input options, software sources and configuration menus as Nokia has managed to cram into the N97, eWEEK Labs has never seen it. But the N97's many features start to shine with continued use, and the form factor is sturdy and pleasingly portable. The price, though--$700--is a tough pill to swallow.

REVIEW: With miSAN D, Cybernetics establishes the right balance of price and features for the price-conscious iSCSI SAN shopper. Where other SAN manufacturers pack innumerable features into their products, Cybernetics focuses on providing only those features you’re likely to use: volume snapshots, internal RAID, full device redundancy and device-to-device replication.

eWEEK Labs' early tests of Windows 7 RC 1 show that the operating system installs and runs quickly and efficiently; is highly polished for this stage of development; already supports a wide array of hardware; and is obviously rich with security, connectivity and usability features when compared with either Windows Vista or XP. However, Microsoft's method for dealing with application compatibility--Windows XP Mode for Windows 7, or XPM--leaves something to be desired.

The Adobe Reader and Acrobat programs have taken many lumps when it comes to security. eWEEK Labs recently tested several alternatives to the free Reader, to see if their capabilities made it worthwhile to switch. Each app the Labs tested had something going for it, but none proved compelling enough to serve as an ongoing alternative to Reader.

REVIEW: Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 may lag behind rival Web browsers such as Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Opera Software's Opera when it comes to some features, but IE 8 can't be beat when it comes to facilities for deploying customized versions across a company. eWEEK Labs' tests show that the free Internet Explorer Administration Kit 8, or IEAK 8, makes it easy to build highly customized versions of the Windows browser for employees.

Lantronix’s ManageLinx offers secure and simple remote monitoring, configuration and management of network devices—sometimes, eWEEK Labs found. The Lantronix solution was relatively easy to set up and showed promise in helping enterprises support remote servers and network devices in branch offices, including Windows and Linux workstations. However, at times the GUI management was confusing and flaky, and while ManageLinx managed a host of devices using different protocols, it stumbled when trying to view streaming video.

LANguard 9.0 is the latest iteration of GFI’s network vulnerability and patch management software. The tool is most useful to SMBs; larger enterprises will want to find something more scalable. The latest version can tell whether a device scanned is real or virtual and can launch a remote desktop connection to a scanned Windows client with one click. It also offers automatic remediation of unauthorized applications.

Commentary: Microsoft is looking to power PC users as a key driver behind the enterprise adoption of the upcoming Windows 7 operating system. Microsoft is hoping for a better reception from businesses than Vista received, despite the fact that Vista also had good enterprise features. But thanks to Microsoft's licensing plan, many of the enterprise features in Windows 7 aren’t in versions that power users will have access to.
