EXCLUSIVE: The FAA, which has suffered a series of embarrassing flight-plan system crashes during the last several years, has upgraded its legacy flight-plan filing system to a new open-systems server and storage infrastructure supplied by Stratus Technologies. This architecture is now replacing critical systems that directly affect all air travelers in the United States.

VirtualBox, Sun's open-source, cross-platform desktop virtualization product, now boasts support for multiple guest processors. Starting with Version 3.0, which began shipping on June 30, Sun's virtualization tool can expose up to 32 virtual processors to its guest instances. The rest of the changes in VirtualBox 3.0 are primarily bug fixes and tweaks. Even so, the "non-free" workstation products from VMware and Parallels will seem a little less shiny now that VirtualBox is sporting its SMP chops.

Cisco and VMware are working on a proof-of-concept around the idea of using VMware’s VMotion technology to move live virtual machines between multiple data centers, a capability that would aid in such areas as load balancing, data center maintenance and disaster avoidance. The two companies demonstrated the proof-of-concept during the Cisco Live show. However, VMware officials warn that more work needs to be done to make the concept a reality.

As AMD’s six-core “Istanbul” Opteron server processor gets the bulk of the publicity, AMD is rolling out additions to its line of quad-core chips. The latest is “Suzuka,” which addresses the issues of power consumption and cost more than scalability. Suzuka is targeted at such environments as cloud computing, Web servers, small business servers and workstations. The new Opteron comes as AMD ramps up its Istanbul push, and as rival Intel rolls out its new Xeon “Nehalem” architecture.

Sun’s VirtualBox virtualization platform, which until now could only run on a single x86 CPU and was good only for desktop applications, can now create and support up to 32 virtual CPUs in a single virtual machine, making it capable of handling server workloads like databases, and putting it in closer competition with virtualization technology from VMware, Citrix and Microsoft. In addition, Sun has improved the graphics capabilities in VirtualBox for desktop applications.

Cisco Systems has a number of projects under way designed to offer businesses solutions that will enable them to run their data centers more efficiently, according to Cisco CTO Padmasree Warrior. Speaking at the Cisco Live event, Warrior says Cisco is changing from a product-driven company to a solution-driven one, and such Cisco products as UCS, TelePresence, WebEx and the Flip video camera will be key players in these solutions.
News
In an attempt to make it easier for businesses to bring VMware virtualization into their data centers, IBM is offering a special financing package for its System x and BladeCenter servers bundled with VMware's vSphere 4 virtualization platform. Key to the financing package is the trading of up-front costs for monthly payments on systems as low as $5,000. One analyst says by eliminating the up-front costs the IBM financing deal removes a key barrier to virtualization adoption.

Oracle’s newest middleware technology platform takes advantage of virtualization and other next-generation technologies being integrated into the enterprise, and includes new developer tools for easier application build. Oracle President Charles Phillips suggested that the company’s goal is to offer a pre-fabricated environment that allows IT administrators a substantial degree of control over their networks without needing to cobble together enterprise IT architecture by improvisation.

Lenovo's updated line of ThinkServers offers cost-conscious businesses expanded memory and are equipped for virtualization. Lenovo also is touting the line's power-saving features.

Cisco Systems CEO John Chambers and other officials at the Cisco Live event are pushing an aggressive plan to expand the company's reach beyond its networking roots and deeper into myriad spaces, from the data center to online collaboration to video to power distribution. Chambers pointed to 30 sectors that Cisco either will enter or grow in over the next 12 to 18 months. The moves promise to bring Cisco into even greater competition with the likes of HP and IBM.

Unisys is rolling out the first offerings in its overall Secure Cloud Solution, a cloud computing strategy that offers a high level of security. Unisys officials argue that security is the key issue that’s holding back adoption of cloud computing, and that its Stealth security technology is a key differentiator as Unisys looks to gain headway in a competitive space that includes the likes of HP, IBM and Sun.

Version 3.0 of Sun's xVM VirtualBox desktop virtualization tool adds support for multiple guest processors--a major feature addition which, when considered alongside the product's low cost (free) and broad host platform support, is certain to give VMware Workstation a run for its money.
REVIEW: VMware vSphere 4--the renamed and upgraded VMware Infrastructure--will allow IT departments to place application workloads on the most cost-effective compute resource. With its new vNetwork Distributed Switch and support for third-party, integrated network switches, vSphere 4 removes barriers that made it difficult to implement and manage virtual machine infrastructure on a large scale. Advances made in this version of VMware's infrastructure platform also include new linked management consoles, host profiles that ease ESX Server creation and maintenance operations, and enhanced virtual machine performance monitors.
Windows 7's XP Mode combines the company's desktop and presentation virtualization technologies to serve up applications that won't run properly on Windows 7 from a virtual XP SP3 instance. By tapping desktop-based virtualization as a bridge for Windows software compatibility gaps, organizations could achieve a smooth transition from Windows to a competing platform.
VMware's demonstration of vSphere 4--the successor to Infrastructure 3 and ESX 3.5--shows that the "cloud operating system" sets the stage for virtualization to fully enter the data center.
REVIEW: Sun Microsystems' no-cost xVM VirtualBox, which enables guest virtual machines to run on a desktop computer, now offers support for Open Virtualization Format, host-only networking that broadens how virtual machines communicate, folder sharing, and OpenGL and 3D graphics support. With these new features, xVM VirtualBox 2.2 is an even more compelling alternative to the $189 VMware Workstation.
