In Office 2007, the Outlook mail client looked a lot like its previous iteration, lacking even a full implementation of the productivity suite's ribbon interface. With Outlook 2010, however, Microsoft has caught the mail client up with the rest of the Office suite. eWEEK Labs' tests of the Outlook 2010 beta show some significant improvements, but also some room for confusion.

Microsoft's "Windows 7 Is My Idea" billboard campaign reminds eWEEK Labs' Andrew Garcia that annoying things about Windows are still present in Version 7--and that new annoyances have been added to the list. Here's what Garcia would add to the OS to make Windows truly his idea.

Office has an unenviable task: getting organizations and individuals excited about undertaking a major upgrade of a platform whose previous versions have been handling users' productivity chores just fine for going on 10 years now. The beta of Office 2010 shows extended Web and mobile reach, as well as a number of useful enhancements across the suite's apps.

VMs-within-VMs-within-VMs raise new virtualization promises and concerns.

However, a powerful pair of trends--driven almost as aggressively by Microsoft as by the rest of the industry--are working to expand the viability not only of Linux but of Mac OS X, Solaris and other platforms yet unknown or uninvented: a shift to Web-based applications and "WaaR," or Windows as a Runtime.

Novell's OpenSUSE 11.2, which is packed with the latest and greatest of what the open-source software world has to offer, sets itself apart from Linux rivals with its focus on power users. This philosophy makes OpenSUSE more discoverable--but also more confusing--than its peers.

The tight Windows-on-Mac market just got tighter with the release of Parallels Desktop 5. Parallels Desktop can now make a Windows virtual machine appear as the only system in Full Screen mode or as almost invisible and just another Mac application in the new Crystal mode. Parallels also now ships with useful tools for managing VM creation.

PC Week's (now eWEEK's) birth year—1984—was a busy one for technology. One platform that began to take shape at that time was focused not on hardware or software but on licensing. Richard Stallman quit his job at MIT to start the GNU project, an effort to produce a clone of the Unix operating system to be distributed under a license that would ensure users' freedom to run, modify and redistribute the software. The open-source model has since driven much innovation in enterprise technology.

VMware Fusion 3 enables the use of Windows, Linux and Mac virtual machines on a physical Mac system. Fusion 3 is competitive with Parallels Desktop Switch to Mac Edition and Sun VirtualBox, with a slight lead in terms of day-to-day operations. While VMware Fusion 3 is aimed at individual users, the product is a worthwhile choice for IT departments that are switching PC systems to Macs.

eWEEK Labs tested Microsoft's new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system on the AT&T Pure device and found that while Version 6.5 is definitely an improvement over previous iterations of Windows Mobile, it has too many vestiges of the past.

Windows 7 DirectAccess is being billed by Microsoft as the "great extender"--a next-generation access technology designed to connect remote clients in the age of the vanishing network perimeter. One of the primary deliverables borne of Microsoft’s “better together” development strategy--which leverages the simultaneous release of the new Windows 7 client OS and the new Windows 2008 Server R2 server OS--DirectAccess worked well in eWEEK Labs' tests. However, system and security requirements may make DirectAccess just a pipe dream for many organizations right now.

It's been a long, hot summer in the open-source world, particularly in the regions where open source and Microsoft butt up against each other. In the midst of this acrimony, Microsoft has launched the Codeplex Foundation, which is aimed at enabling "the exchange of code and understanding among software companies and open-source communities." Can the foundation cool things down?

Parallels Desktop 4.0 Switch to Mac edition makes it simple to convert a physical PC--including applications and data--to a Windows virtual machine running on a Mac. Parallels further eases the transition by including several hours of helpful instructional demonstrations that show step-by-step how to perform tasks in the Mac world.

In the wake of analyst Andrew Garcia's Windows 7 64-bit migration woes, Labs' Jason Brooks considers the bumps he's encountered on his own journey to 64-bit on the Ubuntu Linux machines he runs at home and work.

A move to Windows 7 was driven less by the new operating system's features and more by the 64-bit performance promise, but unexpected issues forced unwanted compromises.

With the release of Windows Server 2008 R2 comes an update to the company's Web platform, Internet Information Services. Like R2, IIS 7.5 isn't a massive upgrade, but it does provide some welcome administration improvements. In addition, the new version seems to acknowledge that Microsoft may have made IIS a little too Apache-like in previous iterations.

End users may not immediately see the improvements in Mac OS X, but they will quickly notice an increase in productivity--all without significant IT impact. Snow Leopard is an evolutionary step that speeds up common tasks and tightens the fit and finish of the now entirely 64-bit based operating system. The upgrade also adds built-in support for Microsoft Exchange Server, but it's limited to Service Pack 1 Rollup 4.

Any organization that goes beyond dabbling with Hyper-V should use System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 to manage virtual resources in the Hyper-V component of Windows Server 2008 R2.

Windows 7 is a relatively modest improvement over Windows Vista in terms of performance, features and security. But, with an aging XP unable to take advantage of the latest hardware and networking technologies, the time is coming for most enterprises to consider a Windows client upgrade. eWEEK Labs put Windows 7 RTM through its paces and found some compelling usability improvements, features that will work best (or only) with Windows Server 2008 R2 and some mixed security messages.
2009-08-14
With this R2 release of Windows Server 2008, Hyper-V gains the ability to shift virtual machines from one host to another without interruption. This version of Windows Server is also the first in a decade to be released in tandem with a new Windows client (in this case, Windows 7). As such, Windows Server 2008 R2 includes many features that make it and Windows 7 "better together."
