Intel Developers Forum happens just once a year here in the U.S. Spanning over 3-days, attendees piled in the Moscone center in San Francisco to check out everything from next generation processor technologies to the newest advances in storage and virtualization. Attendees were also treated to numerous training and information sessions, including topics on blu-ray disk platform development, energy-efficient platforms, extending battery life of mobile PCs using Intel¹s solid state drive solutions and network data protection in the data center. The true eye-catcher, however, at this year¹s conference was Intel¹s 2008 Ultimate Geek Challenge. Contestants were put to the test in three rounds, with the winner walking away with the title Ultimate Geek 2008, as well as winning a brand new Smart Passion Coupe.

Google Video for businesses is a new enterprise application that enables messaging and collaboration among employees who require more discretion in sharing video content. Google Video for businesses leverages the cloud computing infrastructure Google employs for YouTube, one of the company's core Web services. Not even Microsoft can lay claim to this for SharePoint.

The EU (European Union) blocked a WTO (World Trade Organization) investigation of its duties on high-tech imported goods such as satellite boxes, flat-panel computer monitors, and digital scanners and printers. The United States asked for a WTO panel to examine the tariffs Brussels imposes on products the United States believes should get duty-free treatment under the Information Technology Agreement reached in 1996. U.S. manufacturers like HP (Hewlett-Packard) and Canon export about $70 billion of the desktops, laptops, printers and other products covered by the dispute.

What’s new in laptops? From the looks of it not much. But advances in storage, security, battery-life and power consumption are changing the way we use laptops at a blazing pace. SSDs (Solid State Drives) are replacing HDD (Hard Disk Drives) leading to better performance and power consumption; the latest laptops come equipped with data back up and recovery, encryption to protect any data still on the hard drive and even remote security settings to wipe the hard drive; and the five- and six-hour battery will come from the chips and operating systems that run the laptop as well as the screen displays and the drives that use better power consumption.

Dell invested heavily to expand its nonenterprise market share in Europe and in various IT sectors and may have overextended itself in trying to set up retail outlets and woo consumers over to its laptops, desktops and peripherals. Dell revealed in its quarterly report that its fiscal second-quarter profit margins fell a full 17 percent from a year ago.

Dell, the top maker of desktop, notebook and laptop computers, posts a surprisingly steep drop in quarterly earnings and says companies around the world are cutting back on technology spending, sending its shares tumbling and sparking fears of weakness in the whole tech sector. Dell's outlook is for slower spending—especially in Asia and Western Europe. Dell has cut 8,500 jobs so far based on a plan to slash 8,900, and at least one analyst says the results could presage further cutbacks.

Aristos Logic makes multiprotocol RAID storage processor boards that are delivered in both software and silicon solutions. Its ASIC development team has produced a scalable architecture that can be used in multiple product families.

A security flaw in the Apple iPhone allows unauthorized users to gain easy access to private contacts and e-mails even when the device is locked, but the company said a fix is on the way. Popular technology blog Gizmodo and an online forum run by the Mac Rumors site showed that it took only three taps to gain access to locked iPhones, which run the latest 2.02 Apple iPhone software. A spokeswoman said in an e-mail that Apple was aware of the problem and was readying a software update to fix it. In the meantime, she recommended users set the iPhone's "Home" button to open up the phone's iPod music collection rather than the phone's "Favorites" menu.
