Controversial Silicon Valley advertising startup NebuAd drops its plan to sell deep packet inspection technology to ISPs after Congress and public interest groups slam the privacy implications of deep packet inspection. NebuAd suffered through a summer of losing customers and congressional hearing before bailing on the plan that promised ISPs additional revenue sources through DPI.

LinkedIn, the social network that professionals also use as a messaging and collaoration tool, joins forces with financial news site CNBC. The deal will see LinkedIn's networking functionality integrated into CNBC.com, allowing users to share and discuss news with their professional contacts. With such deals, LinkedIn aims to remain independent and grow its user base beyond its current 27 million members.

Secure Computing reaches an agreement to acquire Securify to lead the charge in the development of the next generation of firewalls. The combination of the two companies' security technology will enable Secure Computing to deliver a firewall that regulates network access through business policies, application control and user access control.

SAAS integration startup Appirio adds personal and premium synchronization services that grease operations between Google Apps and Salesforce.com CRM. Appirio aims to integrate with other vendors in the future, but only if IBM, SAP, Oracle or some other legacy software provider doesn't snap up Appirio first. After all, Appirio's solutions are pretty much middleware for cloud computing.

Novell has launched a compliance platform to challenge its competitors in the identity management space, including Oracle and IBM. The platform pulls together a number of Novell products, including Novell Identity Manager and Novell Sentinel. With this enterprise-class solution, Novell goes head-to-head with IBM, Sun Microsystems, Oracle and others.

IBM Sametime 3-D is a mashup of IBM's Lotus Sametime instant messaging and collaboration application with virtual worlds, such as OpenSim. No word on whether or not it will work with Second Life, but IBM will look to take Sametime 3-D out of application development and make it an enterprise application within the Lotus unified communications and collaborations suite.
