Servers suck up their fair share of power, and cooling systems often suck up even more to keep the data center climate under control. Green computing measures can help bring this energy consumption under control and save significantly on the bottom line. Intelligent power management for desktop computers and waste reduction for printers can also generate savings that offset the costs of green investments.

The recent introduction of some cloud computing services has set the hype cycle in motion. But in its current nascent state, cloud computing delivers little more than a dynamically allocated hosting service. To move cloud computing from the overly-hyped stage to being a practical IT architecture will require development tools that allow applications to be created that make use of cloud resources; additional security, and a tight integration between enterprise and cloud infrastructures.

Solid-state drives, or SSDs, don’t have any moving parts, and they’re being considered a faster, more efficient alternative to traditional hard drives. Recent tests from Samsung and other independent labs show that SSDs read and write data faster than hard drives; they consume less power, resulting in longer battery life; and they perform more reliably than hard drives in the long term, with a significantly higher mean time between failures.

Shares of HP (Hewlett-Packard) fell more than 7 percent on Tuesday on concerns about weak sales of printer ink and personal computers, fed in part by pessimistic quarterly earnings from one of the company's distributors. HP, a Dow Jones industrial average .DJI component, was down far more than the index which dropped 0.4 percent. In its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings release on Monday, HP reported a 9 percent increase for printer supplies year-over-year, and an 8 percent drop in printer hardware shipments. HP said its market share would be sustained because slower printer sales have affected the entire industry, and that sales of ink and printer supplies would remain brisk.
