UPDATED: Cisco Systems acquired PostPath, a Microsoft Exchange e-mail storage competitor, and heads down the path of a big-time "co-opetition" to handle enterprise e-mail against a longtime partner, Microsoft. PostPath uses augmented open-source software and an optional appliance that plugs directly into a data center to offer a lower-cost, in-the-cloud e-mail server alternative to Microsoft Exchange. Exchange has long been known as one of the most complicated business software packages that IT personnel handle.

U.S.-CERT is warning of attacks targeting Linux-based infrastructures using compromised SSH keys. After access is gained to the system, local kernel exploits are used to gain root access. A rootkit is then installed to steal more SSH keys. The attack could be related to a flaw affecting Debian-based encryption keys discovered earlier this year.

Mozilla is launching the experimental Ubiquity Web service under an open-source license, providing integrations with Google, Wikipedia, Yahoo, YouTube, Amazon.com, Digg and Twitter. The application runs in the Firefox Web browser, letting average Web users build mashups, which were previously consigned to folks in application development.

In a nod to mobile and wireless security, Google Android advocates explain why the SDK for the forthcoming Android mobile operating system won't include Google Talk and Bluetooth wireless support. GTalkService just wasn't safe as a Remote Procedure Call, while the Bluetooth API just wasn't finished. Both are admitted failures to finish APIs that could have proved useful, but expect Android to produce a new RPC system and support Bluetooth in the future.

Panasas ActiveStor, with its extremely fast parallel file system, is usually found in scientific data centers like that at Los Alamos National Laboratory. But now the system has been tailored for general enterprise use, with an aggregate bandwidth of twice that of the prior generation. It also uses less power and cooling than older systems.

REVIEWS
Ubuntu's deep software catalog, focus on usability and active community combine with long-term support to put desktop Linux's best face forward.
Review: Likewise Enterprise and its open-source sibling, Likewise Open, enable administrators to manage Linux, Macintosh and Unix machines through Microsoft's Active Directory and Group Policy.
Review: Firefox 3 should be welcome both for its many small usability improvements and for its under-the-covers Web rendering engine and security enhancements.
Review: OpenOffice.org 2.3 sports a nifty set of feature improvements, but the suite's sweetest features remain its low cost (free) and its strikingly broad platform support.
Review: The latest versions of fast-moving OpenSUSE, Ubuntu and Fedora make a strong case for Linux on the desktop, but there's lots of integration work to be done.
