VIDEO: Bitnami co-founder and COO Erica Brescia discusses how her firm is bringing open-source applications to Oracle's cloud.

The cloud isn't just about infrastructure as a service for its own sake, it's also about applications and software as a service. At Oracle's OpenWorld event in late October, the company made multiple announcements across its product portfolio with a particular focus on the cloud.

One of those announcements was the debut of the Oracle Cloud Marketplace, which benefits from technology built by Bitnami. In a video interview with eWEEK, Bitnami chief operating officer and co-founder Erica Brescia discusses her firm's partnership with Oracle and why applications are the key to the cloud.

Brescia explained that the Bitnami cloud launchpad is now available to Oracle Cloud users, providing over one hundred different open-source applications and development environments. Bitnami is no stranger to cloud deployments and is also available on the Google Cloud as well as other cloud environments. Bitnami's core promise is that it enables users to rapidly deploy applications, which is a mission the company has been on since 2011.

Oracle's approach to cloud is a little different from some of the other organizations that Bitnami works with.

"Oracle is definitely taking a different approach to cloud; they are unabashedly pursuing the enterprise market," Brescia said. "They are definitely geared up to provide the kinds of services and tooling that enterprise users are looking for."
