Sahara Delivers Hadoop as a Service

In the upcoming OpenStack Juno release, set to officially debut on Oct. 16, the big new addition will be the Sahara project. Sahara was originally known as Savannah and provides a Hadoop big data as a service capability to OpenStack.

Running OpenStack on Bare Metal Is Ironic

Cloud computing assets are generally associated with virtual servers, but there is also a need for real bare metal hardware servers. The OpenStack Ironic project enables bare metal cloud deployment. Ironic was recently approved to be part of the integrated OpenStack Kilo release in 2015.

Share Files With OpenStack Manila

The OpenStack Manila project was approved earlier this month for incubation. "We aim to provide a vendor neutral management interface that allows for provisioning and attaching shared filesystems such as NFS, CIFS, and more," the Manila project's incubation application states.

Designate Provides DNS as a Service for the Cloud

Another project that recently entered into official OpenStack incubation is the Designate DNS-as-a-service project. Among the big contributors to Designate is HP.

Zaqar Builds Out OpenStack Marconi

The OpenStack Zaqar project, originally known as Marconi, aims to bring a full messaging service to OpenStack. Zaqar is currently an incubated project and was recently passed over for graduation as part of the OpenStack Kilo release set for 2015.

Barbican Keeps Cloud Security Keys

The Barbican project was originally known as Cloudkeep and is an effort to build a cloud service for keeping secure keys.

Congress Might Bring Policy to OpenStack

The Congress project is not yet an official OpenStack incubated project, though it might become one at some point in the future. Congress is an effort to build a policy-as-a-service layer for OpenStack.

Solum Bridges the PaaS Gap

The Solum project, which also is not yet an official OpenStack incubated project, is an attempt to more easily enable a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) layer for OpenStack.
