Google and Microsoft have their fingers in so many pies that one could use a Venn diagram to chart the multiple ways the rivals compete for consumers' eyeballs and companies' dollars. Fortunately, that's what research analysts do for us. Gartner analysts Tom Austin and David Mitchell Smith held a Webcast March 31 to discuss the evolving battle between Google and Microsoft, examining their strengths, weaknesses and threats to their businesses. While Microsoft Bing is targeting Google's search engine market share, Google Apps is looking to poach from the massive installed base of more than 500 million Microsoft Office users.
