Amazon's re:Invent event this week in Las Vegas provided an opportunity for customers and partners as well as Amazon itself to showcase the latest and greatest in its cloud computing technologies. Amazon executives detailed a series of innovations for Amazon Web Services (AWS), including enhancements to existing services as well as new cloud services. Typically, Amazon and its partners have leveraged the cloud as a server consolidation and scalability play, but at re:Invent, the focus expanded to the desktop. The new Amazon WorkSpaces service brings Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) to AWS to enable customers to run their desktops in the cloud. Although the cloud has been used for app delivery before, Amazon is now providing a focused product with the new AppStream service that aims to optimize the delivery of resource-intensive apps from the cloud. During his keynote, Amazon Chief Technology Officer Werner Vogels announced new AWS instances designed for resource- and I/O-intensive workloads. The largest of the new instances is the i2.8xlarge offering, which can provide 32 virtual CPUs and 244GB or RAM. In this slide show, eWEEK takes a look at 10 new and enhanced services announced at re:Invent.
