IBM is all-in with the cloud. Big Blue is promoting its cloud prowess and claiming to have a lead over other top players in the space. The company says it has helped thousands of clients adopt cloud models and it manages millions of cloud-based transactions every day. IBM assists clients in many areas, including banking, communications, health care and government, to build their own clouds or securely tap into IBM cloud-based business and infrastructure services. The company's goal is to bring together key cloud technologies, deep process knowledge, a broad portfolio of offerings and a network of global delivery centers to benefit customers. Since 2007, IBM has invested more than $7 billion in 16 acquisitions to build a high-value cloud portfolio, including cloud infrastructure acquisitions like SoftLayer and software-as-a-service acquisitions such as Coremetrics for Web analytics, Unica for marketing operations, Sterling Commerce for business-to-business (B2B) commerce, DemandTec for price optimization, Emptoris for spend management and Kenexa for human capital management. For the invention, IBM received U.S. Patent #8,352,953: Dynamically Provisioning Virtual Machines—which provides a method for automatically deciding the best way for users to access a cloud computing system based on availability of network bandwidth.

    IBM opened its Watson cognitive computing system to developers for building cognitive apps in the cloud. In November, IBM opened up Watson as a development platform in the cloud for a worldwide community of software application providers to build a new generation of apps infused with Watson's cognitive computing intelligence.

    IBM closed its acquisition of SoftLayer in July. SoftLayer is one of the largest cloud infrastructure providers in the world, with more than 100,000 devices under management for 21,000 customers in 140 countries.

For instance, IBM consultants have developed the Insurance Service Hub Cloud, a communication platform on the cloud that connects health insurance companies with multiple data providers such as clinics and physicians, as well as customers via their mobile devices.
