Knowing the way to grow its ecosystem of apps is through developers, BlackBerry teamed up with Sencha, the maker of HTML5-based tools for building applications that run on any device, to recruit new developers to build apps for the BlackBerry 10 platform. "We've known that Sencha and its Web developers are a very collaborative community—one that we wanted to show our support for and be a part of," a BlackBerry spokesman told eWEEK. The two companies joined forces to create the BlackBerry Sencha Lighthouse Program. "The impetus of the Lighthouse Program was a means to show the community that we wanted to roll up our sleeves and work with them to create great BlackBerry 10 apps using standard Web technologies," BlackBerry said. As part of the effort, Sencha called on 25 of the top developers from their community. BlackBerry provided BlackBerry 10 devices to make it easy for the developers to test out apps and created a weekly Webcast where they could interact with Sencha and BlackBerry experts. At SenchaCon 2013 last month, BlackBerry announced seven winners and their apps. Ranging from travel and parking to music and photography, the winning apps showcase what's possible in the world of HTML5 app development. eWEEK offers highlights of the Lighthouse program's winning apps.
