SAN FRANCISCO—To support app development on Microsoft's new Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update 1, the company announced the availability of a release candidate (RC) of Visual Studio 2013 Update 2, which provides significant improvements to the flagship tools suite. Last November, Microsoft launched Visual Studio 2013 and committed to delivering more consistent and frequent Visual Studio releases. The company—which announced Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 RC at the Microsoft Build 2014 developer conference here—said there have been more than 3.7 million downloads of Visual Studio 2013 to date. Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 RC includes Universal Windows Projects that enable developers to build apps that span all Windows devices from one Visual Studio project. It also includes the release of TypeScript 1.0 with the announcement that TypeScript will now accept open-source contributions. Microsoft also announced new tools to support the Windows Phone 8.1 software development kit (SDK), the final release of Team Foundation Server 2013 Update 2, the release of Visual Studio 2013 Release Management Update 1 RC, and the release of the preview of .NET Native Code Compilation for Windows and Windows Phone. This eWEEK slide show looks at some of the developer tools news from Day 1 of Microsoft Build 2014.
