Metrowerks Corp. announced a new platform and tools for building Linux-based applications for devices.
Austin, Texas-based Metrowerks on Monday announced the Metrowerks OpenPDA platform and the Metrowerks CodeWarrior for OpenPDA application development tools.
Metrowerks officials said the OpenPDA platform consists of a Linux operating system environment, Java software, development tools, integration services and training. The solution is targeted at companies building PDAs and applications that run on PDAs.
In fact, Metrowerks is working to ensure that OpenPDA applications will be portable to various leading semiconductor architectures. The platform supports ARM Ltd. and MIPS Technologies Inc. silicon architectures, and the company plans to announce support for additional architectures in the coming weeks, company officials said.
The development platform includes the Trolltech Inc. user interface, Esmertec AGs Java virtual machine, and Opera Software ASAs browser, as well as the embedded Linux OS source code and CodeWarrior tools from Metrowerks.
“The OpenPDA initiative provides a highly integrated solution for our i.MX1 applications processors, based on a set of de facto standard tools. What attracted us to the OpenPDA solution was the Linux-based production software that is ready to go directly into handheld devices, combined with world class customer support and engineering services,” said Kyle Harper, Handheld Strategic Markets Manager in Motorola Inc.s Wireless & Broadband Systems Group in Austin.
