Providing notebook PCs with performance and capacity typically found in desktop PCs, Fujitsu Computer Products of America on March 28 unveiled a 200GB, 2.5-inch serial ATA hard disk drive.
Building on the strength of Fujitsus 160GB, 2.5-inch SATA HDD, the MHV2200BT, which will begin shipping in the third quarter, is designed to allow customers to support increasingly complex mobile computing applications. In addition to its 200GB capacity, the HDD will feature a hardware accelerator that uses NCQ (Native Command Queuing) to allow the disk drives controller to queue and reorder up to 32 instructions more easily, according to officials of the Sunnyvale, Calif., company.
The MHV2200BT offers 4,200-rpm rotational speeds and is equipped with an interface featuring SATA II extensions to SATA 1.0a and Electrical Spec. 1.0, as well as ATA-7. Other specifications of the mobile hard disk include HIPM and DIPM support, RoHS compliance, staggered spin and active LED support, and Idle power consumption.
The need for increased capacity and functionality in mobile hard disk drives is becoming greater as the number of mobile and remote workers continues to swell.
Other factors, such as the requirements of external HDD products and the growing popularity of high-end audio/video computing applications, as well as digital video editing and recording tools being maximized by enterprise customers, are also driving demand.
