Even with significant advances in video technology, content owners and publishers continually face obstacles to providing video that is viewable on any device, anywhere in the world. Viewers demand the same broadcast-quality experience for online video that they get from traditional television, and buffering increasingly is a major—and literal—turn-off. In fact, a recent study by Nice People at Work, a big data IT company that uses real-time data to help its customers deliver TV-quality online video, found that when viewers experience a buffer ratio higher than 2 percent, their risk of churn increases by 30 percent. This puts a significant burden on publishers.
