Telerik has announced the Kendo UI framework, a new development tool for HTML5 and JavaScript developers.
Telerik, which makes tools for .NET developers, said its new framework is targeted at professional software developers, and delivers everything needed for front-end development with JavaScript and HTML5.
“Building applications and sites today with HTML5 and JavaScript is an exercise in self-assembling an array of libraries and toolsets to compose a platform that has all of the necessary components for development,” Todd Anglin, Telerik’s executive vice president for Kendo UI, said in a statement. “This approach is acceptable for hobby projects, but it is fraught with support and licensing risks, it is difficult to maintain and upgrade, it is difficult to learn, and it wastes valuable development time. Kendo UI solves this problem by providing a unified framework with all of the necessary components for building HTML5 and JavaScript apps and sites.”
Kendo UI launches with three distinct packages: Kendo UI Web, Kendo UI DataViz and Kendo UI Mobile CTP. The Kendo UI Web features more than a dozen rich HTML5 JavaScript UI widgets, including a Grid, plus essential framework components like a Data Source, touch-enabled drag-and-drop, and high-performance JavaScript templating engine. Kendo UI DataViz is a suite of HTML5-powered data visualization widgets, including animated charts. And Kendo UI Mobile CTP is an early preview of Kendo UI widgets built for solving the problems of building mobile applications with HTML5.
Building on top of the popular jQuery JavaScript library, Kendo UI leverages the latest in CSS3, HTML5 and JavaScript Web standards, while still delivering broad support for all major browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, and mobile browsers on iOS and Android, Telerik said in a press release on the new software.
“Developers today, faced with an increasingly fragmented computing landscape, are turning to HTML5 and JavaScript to build software that can run anywhere and reach the largest possible audience,” Svetozar Georgiev, CEO of Telerik, said in a statement. “Kendo UI simplifies the adoption of this rapidly evolving platform, helping developers quickly embrace the future with less risk. It also serves as an opportunity for Telerik to move beyond its .NET roots and apply our knowledge and expertise to providing tools for the broader world of HTML5 and JavaScript developers.”
Kendo UI is available under both a commercial and open-source-GPLv3-license, making the new tools accessible to a diverse range of projects. Commercial licenses during the initial release will cost $399 and will include Kendo UI Web, Kendo UI DataViz, access to professional support, and all major and minor updates for one year. Free commercial trial licenses are also available.
