Six Challenges That Keep CIOs, Other IT Pros Up at Night

What worries CIOs and IT professionals the most? A recent survey commissioned by IT service provider Sungard Availability Services identified CIOs' three top concerns: the health of their organizations' security plans, both internally and externally; the increasing cost and threat of downtime; and acquiring and retaining top talent. "IT professionals are under constant stress. They're expected to keep an organization's systems secure and data always available, while many times receiving limited support and resources," said Ric Jones, CIO of LifeShare Blood Centers. With the average cost of a data breach, which came in at $5.84 million in 2014, on the rise, along with the steep cost of downtime, which averages $686,000 per hour, it's no surprise IT pros are losing sleep. "Given the complexity of most IT environments today, and the absolute criticality of data availability to business operations, recruiting the right IT talent can often have a direct impact on a company's bottom line," said Jones. This eWEEK slide show dives into what's causing CIOs' concerns, and how they can be addressed.
