NEWS ANALYSIS: Apple’s iPhone 5S is reportedly slated for a summer launch. This is likely the best timing for a new model that will be at best a modest upgrade of the iPhone 5.

Apple is reportedly planning to launch its next smartphone, the iPhone 5S, during the summer. The smartphone, which Apple has not even confirmed exists, is expected to come with only minor improvements over the iPhone 5, including a better processor, a slightly improved camera and the same design.

The device is believed to be on par with what one would expect from one of Apple’s “S” devices, so it won’t generate the kind of excitement new designs might.

The most important consideration about the iPhone 5S, though, is when it will launch. The device will be paired up against some of the most impressive Android-based devices available today.

It will also compete with the new BlackBerry 10 models along with other devices running Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system. In other words, the iPhone 5S will face some hefty competition. Launching it at the right time to achieve the most success is something Apple must consider.

So summer 2013 is the best launch window for the company to have the best chance of generating the most sales.

Here are the reasons why.

1. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is a huge threat

The Samsung Galaxy S4 could very well be the biggest threat to any iPhone Apple has ever launched. The device’s 5-inch display is much bigger than the iPhone 5’s, has a far better processor and vastly improved camera. Apple needs to get a better device than the iPhone 5 onto store shelves sooner than later or look like the obsolete alternative to the Galaxy S4.

2. The timing seems right

The timing seems right for a summer launch. Apple offered up the iPhone 5 just a few months ago, but that was a major update. The iPhone 5S will be a smaller upgrade designed for stragglers who didn’t get last year’s device. Getting it out the door sooner than later only makes sense if Apple intends to target the late adopters.

3. It follows iOS 7

Apple’s iOS 7 might just be the best reason for Apple to launch the iPhone 5S in the summer. In recent years, Apple has offered up its latest operating systems in the summer and so offering the smartphone at the same time would make perfect sense. However, there are rumors iOS 7 will be delayed and the iPhone 5S may have to debut without it.

4. It won’t be a major upgrade

The iPhone 5S won’t be a major upgrade. The device will come with some enhancements to the internal components. But those hoping for something dramatically different will be disappointed. The iPhone 5S doesn’t require all of the manufacturing lead time of a totally revamped product, making it easier to get out the door in the summer.
