Reviews for Apple's iPhone 5 have been overwhelmingly positive, with one glaring exception—its in-house maps and navigation application, which so infuriated users that company CEO Tim Cook issued a rare public apology for the shoddiness of the maps. Apple even took the unusual step of recommending alternatives to the maps found on iOS 6, including Microsoft Bing, MapQuest and Waze. Apple also recommended using Google or Nokia maps by going to their Websites and downloading an icon onto the iPhone 5's home screen. Now, we're not advocating crummy maps—a solid navigation application is one of the most useful features any smartphone can offer—so in the true spirit of Columbus Day, where we honor a man who had no idea where he was going, what he found, or where he thought he was when he found it, here is a selection of high-quality mapping and navigation apps that will make sure you get to where you need to go. You might not get a national holiday named after you, but at least you'll show up.
