Automotive Technology a Focus at Nvidia's GTC Event

Automotive technology was a key subject at the recent GPU Technology Conference (GTC) 2015, which was hosted by Nvidia. The underlying theme throughout the show in San Jose, Calif., was deep learning—also known as machine learning—the idea that systems can be programmed to learn from past experiences and adapt accordingly. Deep learning capabilities will be important in a world of self-driving cars, which will have to be able to understand everything going on around them—from traffic flows and road signs to street addresses and directions—and Nvidia officials said the company's GPU technology will play an increasingly crucial role in deep learning. At GTC, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang introduced new offerings aimed at the automotive industry, and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk said he expects that within the next 15 years or so, autonomous cars will work so well and increase road safety so much that having humans driving cars will become illegal. There was a self-driving car at the show. Cars that use Nvidia technology also were a big part of the exhibit floor. This eWEEK slide show takes a look at some of the automotive technology at the show.
