While Apple's iPhone 5S may have triggered a resurgence of humanity's collective fascination with gold, the latest smartphone from Apple is still within reach—financially, anyway—of the masses. HTC upped the ante when it comes to precious metals on phones with the announcement this week that it will be manufacturing five One handsets made of 18-carat gold in honor of this year's MOBO awards in Glasgow. While HTC and its partner Goldgenie certainly got the attention they were looking for, the partnership is far from the first—or flashiest—attempt to craft an exclusive mobile phone. Indeed, Goldgenie also offers 24-carat Gold, Rose Gold, Platinum and Swarovski iPhone 5s on its Website. Moving beyond Goldgenie, luxury carmakers such as Porsche, Lamborghini and Aston Martin have all collaborated to produce stunning smartphones with an emphasis on design and fine materials—Porsche and BlackBerry's P'9981 comes with a forged steel frame and leather backing, for example—while typically outrageous fashion house Dior went completely over the top with a $107,000 smartphone, of which only 50 were made. You may never get your hands on any of these devices, but it's always interesting to see how far the luxury market will push to create a product that few will ever own. Just don't drop it.
