This one is an obvious one. The Samsung Galaxy S III is the top Android-based smartphone on the market, offering a 4.8-inch screen, a quad-core processor and double the onboard memory available in the iPhone 5. It might be tough for some smartphone shoppers to choose the iPhone 5 over the Galaxy S III.

Apple’s iPhone 5 has been on the market for less than a month, but already, it’s impressing consumers and enterprise users. The device’s 4-inch display is downright beautiful, and its addition of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) service is welcome. With a new design and the same pricing to boot, the iPhone 5 is one of the most appealing mobile products on store shelves today. But not everybody is happy with the new iPhone. Many users, product reviewers and market analysts have made scathing remarks about the poor quality of the Apple Maps application that replaced Google Maps on iPhone 5. It’s also clear that the Siri voice-response application remains a work in progress. That provides an opportunity for some of the best of the competing devices to win over smartphone buyers. The mobile market is currently packed with several products that have their sights set on the iPhone 5. The smartphones deliver everything from improved hardware features to solid software, making them worthwhile alternatives to Apple’s latest handset. That’s not to say that all smartphones are better than the iPhone 5, but one should be ready to make a tough decision when choosing between the following devices and Apple’s iPhone 5. And don’t forget that the iPhone 4 and 4S remain as effective alternatives to the iPhone 5. Take a look at this eWEEK slide show to find out which competing smartphone models present the strongest challenge to the iPhone 5.
